Tree Meets House

The Northeast had a crazy storm yesterday, and look what happened...

Luckily, no one was hurt, and though there's damage to my brand, new freaking porch!, it doesn't look too awful.  If this tree had fallen another way, it could've been a very different story.

Oh no! Not your brand new porch! :( That sux! The winds and rain yesterday really did some damages. The news was full of delayed trains, trees down and outages. Hope the tree damage isn't too extensive.

I know! But I'm trying to focus on the bright side. That tree could've taken out part of the main house, or the cars.

I was driving home from DC yesterday in that mess. DC to NY took 8 hours. What a nightmare!

I'm so sorry about your house! Like you said, at least no one was hurt, but property damage still sucks.
Do you have insurance that will cover the repairs? I hope so.

Stupid storm!

Yeah, we're fully insured, so I'm not worried. Its a pretty clear cut case of storm damage, and we have high wind coverage. If the insurance company gives me shit, I'm going to go medieval on their asses.

And I really liked that tree too. :(

Thanks though, for the house comment.

Ya know, my trees have been through hurricanes, and other storms, and this is the first time one fell over. Poor tree:(

and thanks! I'm very pleased with the results of all the work we had done on the house. Now, its time to tackle the interior!

OMG! As bad as it is, still, it looks like you guys dodged a really nasty bullet!
Mar. 14th, 2010 06:56 pm (UTC)
We were lucky for sure. There were a lot of ways for that tree to fall that would've been disasterous.
Mar. 14th, 2010 06:52 pm (UTC)
OMG! This looks really bad but I'm glad no one was hurt!
Mar. 14th, 2010 06:56 pm (UTC)
Everyone is fine, and thats the most important thing.
Mar. 14th, 2010 07:12 pm (UTC)
Oh no! Did any squirrels lose their tree home?

I like your white picket fence in front of your house and the hedge on the side. Is the hedge, Rose of Sharon?

Good luck with the insurance.
Mar. 14th, 2010 07:25 pm (UTC)
I think the squirrels will be OK. We have plenty of other trees for them to have a home in.

It is a hedge, but I have no idea what kind. It actually looks great in the spring and summer. Its looking a little sparse at the moment.

And thanks. I'm not anticipating any problems, but I guess you never know when insurance companies are going to be stupid.

You'd be amazed at how NOT loud it was. You'd think a tree going into a house would be a loud crash, but it was more of a low thud.
Mar. 14th, 2010 08:01 pm (UTC)
OMG, and it's such a big tree too. Must have been quite the shock for you.
Mar. 14th, 2010 08:28 pm (UTC)
It sure was. I looked out my front door after hearing the "thud" and I couldn't beleive what I was looking at.
Mar. 14th, 2010 08:26 pm (UTC)
OMG, that must have been a shock! I'm so glad no one was hurt! And I have to say, the contractor who built your porch did a great job, I would have expected a tree that size to crush whatever was in its path. A friend of my mom's had a tree fall on her house during a storm recently, and it pretty much sliced it in two.

I hope everything goes smoothly with the insurance company! Will the tree at least make suitable firewood? ;)
Mar. 14th, 2010 08:30 pm (UTC)
I think we were lucky in that the tree didn't come completely out of the ground, so its still rooted a bit. Also, it just glanced along the edge of the porch as opposed to slamming into it. Like I said, lucky!

I'm sure it would make suitable firewood, but we don't use our fireplace. Too much hassle for me to bother with.

Wow, that´s scary. But your porch seems to be quite stable. (And I love those porches around American houses. Not our style here, regrettably.) BTW, your white fence reminds me of Tom´s house in L.A. :))
Mar. 15th, 2010 12:58 am (UTC)
Strangely enough, our houses do have a similar style. It must be fate! LOL

I'm hoping there isn't any substantial structural damage to the porch, but we won't really know until we can get rid of the tree, and have the contractor in to assess it.
Mar. 14th, 2010 11:05 pm (UTC)
Hooly crap! I'm glad that you're okay! That must have been scary as heck, though.
I live up in Maine and it was clear as a bell here last night. We could see stars. Lol, yes, I am rubbing this in your face ;)
Mar. 15th, 2010 01:01 am (UTC)
You guys were lucky. It was a nightmare from DC all the way up to NY. I know Jersey is a mess too. We appear to be the only people on the block lucky enough to have a tree tumble into the house *she says with sarcasm*
Mar. 14th, 2010 11:50 pm (UTC)
OMG, that was nearly a disaster. Considering the size of the tree, I'm amazed the porch wasn't taken out completely. Thank goodness you're all well. I imagine the clean up has been "fun".
Mar. 15th, 2010 01:02 am (UTC)
We can't even start to clean anything up until the insurance adjuster comes. But we had stuff all over the property, like garbage cans, and small branches. I took care of most of that today, though its still raining and I could only do so much.

Oh, don't worry. I won't. We're covered for storm and wind, and our trees are very well maintained. So, I don't expect a lot of crap, but I guess you never know.
Mar. 15th, 2010 12:24 am (UTC)
That's terrible that happened, but as others have said, glad you didn't have worse damage.

And on the bright side, we all get to see how beautiful your house is! I'm jealous!
Mar. 15th, 2010 01:06 am (UTC)
Thanks. It took a lot of money to get the house looking like this. And even with the insurance covering most of the damage, I'm still going to have to get a landscaper in to repair the lawn, and the border to the driveway, and that won't be covered by insurance. :(
