Tom Movie Rumor!!!!

Thanks to VickiLCVM over at K-Site for finding this:

UPDATE:  Apparently the director has been quoted as saying that Dean Cain was taking the role, and DC is listed on the imdb page for this.  Could this be a case of someone getting their "Superman's" mixed up?  Very possibly.  :(

Oh Please Be True!!  Because watching Tom play a drug addicted banker with a stripper girlfriend in a cheesetastic horror film sounds like WIN! to me (and damned fun)

Richard Stanley to take his vacation with Superman

A couple of years ago, it was announced that Richard Stanley (pictured), director of HARDWARE (coming soon on DVD, as we first reported here) and DUST DEVIL, was planning to make his big-screen comeback with an apocalyptic thriller called VACATION, to star Bruce Campbell. Then the news well on that one went dry—but Fango hears that the project is back on track again, with a new star.

Tom Welling, who plays Clark Kent/Superman on TV’s SMALLVILLE and also starred in the remake of THE FOG, is said to be taking over for Campbell in the story of a coke-addicted banker who travels with his stripper girlfriend to a seedy Middle Eastern resort. Their own personal problems soon pale before the disaster that strikes in the form of freak solar storms that eradicate all means of communication, leaving them stranded in an extremely hostile environment. Stanley wrote the screenplay with Maggie Moor, with whom he also created the short film THE SEA OF PERDITION, which you can see along with more info on what Stanley’s up to at the filmmaker’s MySpace page. Keep your eyes here for further updates on VACATION.

Why can't Tom Welling be the the Stripper Boyfriend who travels with his coke addicted banker girlfriend? And that "freak solar storm" better eradicate all forms of clothing along with communication. And that "hostile environment" better include a lot of sunshine and light---No Shadows to Hide in!

Ok, I'm in. Thanks for the info.

Well, if the stripper girlfriend can manage to get the clothes off him, then close enough! I do like the idea of the freak solar system rendering all forms of clothing.

I don't know, sounds like fun to me.

OMG! please be true!
I would love to see him in something totally different!and a coke-addict sounds good to me lol

I would love to see him do something totally different as well. And I've been saying for a while that I'd love to see him take on the role of a shifty/sleazy guy. This could be it *fingers crossed*

Honestly, I'd be happy about seeing him in anything that wasn't SV. Anything!

Wow, that sounds fantastic! Give Tom a chance to do some dark humour, which he is very good at.

I guess it starts filming spring 2010?

I'm a huge Bruce Campbell fan, and I very much doubt that BC would have even been attached to this project if it didn't have humor. So, I'm hoping.

You know I am ALL over that hahahahahah

But when are they starting filming? I mean he won't be done with SV til late April 2010?

According to the director's MySpace page, "this winter". I can't see Tom having time to film this kind of movie over winter hiatus, nor do I think TPTB would let him take on a stunt laden project like this with half a season of Smallville to film.

I'm going to wait on actual confirmation before I attempt to care. Frankly, it sounds horrid and I'm leaning toward wanting it to not be true, despite wanting to see Tom do something different than SV.

That and I find it hard to believe that after likely turning down movie roles for years, this is what he'd choose to start back up with.

Well, I did post that it was a rumor, but its nice to have hope that I might get a chance to see Tom in a project outside of SV. I think the movie sounds fun, but I tend to like horror movies, especially ones with dark humor and odd premises. Thats just up my alley, and I'd love to see Tom really branch out and take on a character like this.

And I do think Tom might be intrigued by something really different from what he's been doing. Though honestly, none of us really have any clue what makes him tick, or what sort of project would excite him. I know he's said that Christopher Walken was a huge idol of his, and lets be honest, that guy has taken on a lot of strange roles. Its very possible that something safe, like a romantic comedy for instance, just doesn't hold much appeal for Tom. Who really knows?

Sounds interesting.

I'm still holding out hope that I'll one day see him as Jesse Custer in Precher. Probably won't happen, but I think he'd kick ass in it.
Jul. 14th, 2009 11:13 pm (UTC)
I'm not familiar with the character.

But I suspect Tom could kick ass in many different sorts of projects. I really want him to play a dark character.

I don't really like the premise of the film and, honestly, that's not the kind of movie I'd love to see Tom in. But if the rumor ends up being true, I'd like to believe that Tom had very good reasons to choose such a project. Of course I'll watch anything Tom does!

But if it gets confirmed and Tom has to miss a few SV episodes to do the movie, then the little interest I still have in season 9 will vanish altogether. And if season 9 is SV's last season, I don't think the timing would be right. Season 9 has to be "the season" for Clark. So that contributes to my not being able to enjoy this rumor much. :(
Jul. 14th, 2009 11:48 pm (UTC)
I'd be willing to have Tom miss a few SV eps if he was doing another project. I just wouldn't watch those S9 eps without him when they aired. Its not as if SV is really giving him great material these days.
Jul. 14th, 2009 11:31 pm (UTC)
You know, I never thought I would be happy to hear about Bruce Campbell being replaced for a part in a movie.

That would be the greatest news in the history of great news!
Jul. 14th, 2009 11:49 pm (UTC)
I think its likely to be quickly debunked, but for just a minute there, I thought I'd get the chance to see Tom in something else *sigh*

I'm afraid to hope it's true. I'd love to see him do some off the wall projects like this.
Jul. 14th, 2009 11:50 pm (UTC)
I think now the conflicting info is starting to come in, and its likely not true. But I would also love to see him doing some odd parts. Just something different. Hell, JUST SOMETHING...ANYTHING!
Jul. 14th, 2009 11:38 pm (UTC)
I SO hope this is true!!! While I have a feeling it won't get an Oscar nod, it could allow Tom to really flex his acting muscles. And if he has a stripper girlfriend, you know there's got to be at least 1 sex scene!! *fingers crossed*

Well, right now, it ain't looking good :(

And honestly, Tom has sort of taken himself out the spotlight, and he does nothing to promote himself, so I think this illusion that he's just going to get offered the top films out there is a pipe dream. Does he have the talent and charisma? Yes, I think so. But if he's unwilling to get off his ass to get his name and face out there...well, the business doesn't work like that. Quirky roles in lower budget films might be what he needs to get his foot back in the door that he let slam on him.

After reading your update, I'm sad and relieved, all at the same time! Can you believe it!

I really want to see Tom playing another role, I do!, but I wouldn't want to see him doing movies that will likely turn out not-so-good. I know it's hard to have high expectations wrt his movie career when he himself seems to do nothing to promote it, but I can't help to still dream of a very good role in a very good film for him. At this point, I too long for him to do something non SV related but... anything? I don't know. As usual when it comes to this matter, I'm torn!
Jul. 15th, 2009 03:03 am (UTC)
At this point, I'm sort of leaning towards the belief that Tom is not very high in demand. It would be nice to have a project to look forward, since SV is, more often then not, a disappointment.

Thanks for sharing the news Valerie even if it sounds like its gone from a rumor to maybe a mix up. Personally I like that we are talking about the possibility of Tom doing a movie project *grins*. I know he works really long hours on SV and no doubt when they go on hiatus he's happy to be able to do whatever the heck he want's to do. It just would have been nice to hear that one of these summers that he would have been working on a small "indie" film. I agree that the chance of him being noticed and picked for a big budget movie is slim because of his commitments to SV (Warner) and because he's not putting himself "out there." But "indie" films would be perfect and nowadays small films have a bigger chance of getting noticed and find themselves getting critical attention.

ie..The Toronto Film Festival in September creates the buzz for the critics and small films suddenly get large studios bidding on their films so that's why most of Hollywood transplants itself here during that time. I'd luv to be going to see a small film starring Tom Welling *grins*

You're welcome. I just wish it wasn't just a rumor gone wrong, but instead was a new project we could be excited about, and talk about for a few months. Now its back to wondering how much SV can screw Clark, while Tom perfects his invisibility act.
