You can't argue with the numbers

I just had to get this off my chest...

So, many of you know that I kept a running screentime minute total for all the main (younger) cast members of SV for the 6th season.  It started when I had a lot of complaints about, what seemed, like a lot less Clark screentime, and then it just sort of took on a life of its own.  I totally admit to being a bit anal ;)

Anyway, I decided to go back and do the same thing for S5.  And while I'm only about halfway done, Oh My Freaking God!!  Lets just say that the complaints about dwindling Clark screentime were not people bitching for no reason, or talking out of their ass.  So far, and unless something radically changes in the eps I haven't done yet (unlikely), Clark's screentime numbers took a significant hit.

Let me just give you a for instance:

S6's first 3 eps:
Zod:  17m, 51s
Sneeze:  15m, 6s
Wither:  14m, 21s

Total:  47m,  18s

S5's first 3 eps:
Arrival:  21m, 15s
Mortal:  28m, 17s
Hidden:  21m, 41s

Total:  71m, 13s

Thats a 20+ minute difference.

And for end of the season:

S6 last 2:
Prototype:  15m, 29s
Phantom:  16m, 18s

Total:  31m, 47s

S5 last 2:
Oracle:  21m, 40s
Vessel:  20m, 52s

Total:  42m, 32s

Its really blowing my mind!!  But I do feel a tad vindicated for all my bitching and whining.  LOL

I thought it was just my perception that made it seems like he was onscreen less.

Well, if it's any consolation, it would seem like what little I've heard about this season is that it will be more Clark centered than last.

I don't think anyone would object to that, do you?

I sure hope you are right, because I have to be honest...with the new cast additions, I'm not feeling so optimistic about a whole lot of Clark focus. Though to answer your question, I can't imagine there would be a lot of complaints if there was. Its always been my feeling that a very large core of the audience would be happiest with a Clark/Lex focused show.

Good grief! I knew he'd had less screen time, but seeing the actual numbers...oi. That's messed up. :-/

Oh yeah, bigtime. And I knew there had been a change, but to actually start seeing the numbers emerge? Its unreal. And while I haven't done some Clark light eps, like Lexmas, Lockdown or Tomb, I also haven't done some Clark heavy eps like Reckoning, Vengeance or Hypnotic.

But here's another contrast, S5's Thirst and Exposed? Neither one really Clark-focused eps, right? He had 18+m in thirst, and over 20+ in Exposed.

Wow. All I can say is that I'm tired of being told that Clark's dwindling screentime in s6 wasn't really that much. Bullshit. It's very obvious that it was cut down quite a bit.

Thanks for doing these screentime totals!

Its my pleasure. I'm a chick on a mission now. LOL!

And yeah, don't let anyone tell you its our imagination. But you know what the next answer will be, right? Its Tom's fault. He wanted it. *rollseyes*

Heh, yeah. Rolling my eyes right along with you. Until I see a quote from Al, Miles, or Tom, I refuse to believe that he asked for time off.

Oh, you know how it goes...bad Tom wants less screentime, mean Tom won't do publicity, rude Tom skins puppies and pokes the eyes out of kittens, evil Tom was the shooter on grassy knoll. And so on, and so forth.

Yes, I knew we were right with our complaining!

Thanks for giving us proof of what we knew (and other people denied) Now I understand even better why I disliked most of season 6 as much as I did.

Numbers don't lie Carol. These are cold, hard facts. And there's a huge difference. Something definitely changed. And yeah, it certainly helps to explain why S6 is by far my least favorite SV season.

You know i never realised that there was that much of a gap between the screen time for Tom in Season compared to this season, but by mid-season 6 it became clear that it was going to be ALL. ABOUT. LANA. again so i can't say i ma too suprised, that Clark has had less screen time , Hopefully next season will better though something tells me it will all about the KLex (Clex version II). Why can't the producers rememeber what this show was about at the beginning? and stick to that?

I have no idea why this show has drifted the way it has. I think part of it can be explained by a lack of interest in Clark as a character from those in charge. Or maybe they find him too restrictive. I don't know. I can't imagine doing a show about Clark Kent, future Superman, and not loving him. I'd think you'd have to to pull it off.

Once I have all the numbers, we can also see how things changed for the other characters. For Lex fans, my initial numbers seems to indicate that Lex had more focus in S6 then S5. But like I said in another comment, there are a few Lex-focused eps of S5 I haven't tallied up yet.

And see this is what really gets me: should they have at least i dunno READ the comic books before making all that noise about how this is going to be the untold story of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor? why start of by saying this is the story of a young superman, and presenting it as that if they had no interest in the character whatsoever. I just can't help feeling that if someone like say... Eric kripke was invlved in the show it would a lot better. And that saddens me

Looking back at it all now, I think there was a fundamental mistake in the show's foundation. It never should've been a "Big 3". By including Lana as one of the main characters, I think that not only did AlMiles get sidetracked, the whole show got thrown off center, and its just continued to drift further and further with each season. Not that I'm blaming the Lana character, but what I'm saying is that they took their eye off the ball almost from the word Go!.

Wow, that's just kind of mind-blowing. I'd be interested to see who else's screen time went up, though I bet I could make a pretty good guess.

When I have all the numbers, we can do a much better compare and contrast. Clark went way down, there's no doubt about that. And thus far, Lex actually went up in S6, though not significantly. Honestly, I haven't really looked at Lana's numbers compared to last season, but she seems to have more screentime early in S5 then she had in S6. But I don't think I'm seeing a huge difference overall in her numbers.

I think its almost a certainty that Oliver's character took a chunk of screentime from Clark.
Aug. 1st, 2007 07:16 pm (UTC)
I think it's a couple of things. It's true that Oliver did take up some time. I think one of the other big factors, though, was that while Lana and Lex's screen time didn't change much, a lot of it wasn't with Clark. All the Lexana scenes took time away from Clark.
Aug. 1st, 2007 07:24 pm (UTC)
Thats a good point. Also taking away from Clark was the Lois/Ollie romance, and the Chloe/Jimmy romance. All these couplings had very little interaction overall. S5 was only dealing with the Lexana.

I miss the days when Clark was the connective tissue between all the characters. But mostly I miss his scenes with MR :(
Aug. 2nd, 2007 05:24 pm (UTC)
I do too. :(

I just don't get it...because I have read quotes from Goughlar where they acknowledge that the show suffers when it strays too far from Clark's POV. So, what changed in S6? Something huge.
