S2 Screen Time Comparions to Other Season

Here are the screen time totals for the whole SV cast for season 2, and some comparisons to the other seasons.

As I already posted in my last entry, S2 consisted of 23 episodes.  The only SV season to do so.  The reason for that is the episode Redux, which was actually made in S1, and was re-edited and stuck into S2.  So, that creates a quandry for me.  Do I include the numbers for that episode in S2 totals?  Even when I know that it was made during S1?  Do I include the totals for that episode in S1?  Knowing it was made during that season, and would more accurately reflect the actors schedule?

So, what I've decided to do is offer alternatives.  I'll show the S2 totals for all 23 episodes.  Then I will do a comparison against the other 22 episode seasons, omitting the numbers for Redux.  And to compare to the shortened S7, I will exclude the numbers for the last 2 episodes,  in addition to Redux.  While excluding the numbers for the final 2 episodes of the earlier seasons may not be the most accurate way to compare the numbers to S7, I don't know how else I'd do it.  Maybe an accurate comparison really can't be made to S7.

I'm going to post everything under a cut, since its lots of numbers.  LOTS of them, LOL  Since we're comparing S2 to the later seasons, I'm not including the numbers for characters that came later.  So, this post will have none of the numbers for Lois, or Jason, or Oliver.

I will do one comparison here that was requested by tariel22   She asked how Clark's number were faring so far this season, as compared to the last few seasons.

So, as requested:

After 10 eps in S8:  202m, 38s
After 10 eps in S7:  188m, 15s
After 10 eps in S6:  157m, 48s
After 10 eps in S5:  210m, 10s
After 10 eps in S4:  213m, 10s (this number is for "Clark" time.  TW actually has almost 10m more due to Transference)
After 10 eps in S3:  227m, 25s (again, this number is for "Clark" time.  TW has even more due to Relic)

I'm leaving off S2, because the Redux issue comes up again, and I don't know how to solve that issue.  LOL

And Type your cut contents here

I put the numbers of eps each character appears in next to the season.  If you don't see anything there, that because they didn't miss an episode.

That is an amazing, fascinating, thorough analysis. I love poring over the numbers, trying to see and understand the story they tell. It's interesting to note the jump in minutes for Clark's parents in S5. Jonathan did especially well considering how few episodes he was in. And it's all too disheartening to note the severe drop off in Martha's time in S6. I think AOT was smart to get out when she could. That season can't have been very satisfying for her as an actress.

It's also interesting to note that Lex's and Lana's times have been pretty consistent, and also pretty equal, at least through S5, while Chloe's minutes have increased as Clark's have gone down. Thank you so much for taking the time to look at S8 so far! I know a lot can change by the time the season is complete, but I find it encouraging that at least the numbers haven't dropped.

I know this has been, and continues to be, a huge project for you, and I appreciate so much that you do it. It's one of the first things that made me a fan of yours on TWoP, and I am always enthralled by the information you compile. Thank you, Valerie!

I think what they did to AOT in S6 is a travesty. And then they were surprised she wouldn't come back? Idiots!

Chloe's minutes have just skyrocketed over the course of the show, but then took a dip in S7. I think trying to compare that season to the others is a bit like trying to compare apples and oranges. Its just such a mess.

And you're welcome. As we get more and more numbers, the whole project becomes more unwieldy. But I'll see it through to the end. I just wish I had a better way to display the numbers so that it wasn't so confusing. Maybe I should experiment.

Thanks so much for doing the averages. I am going to find a way to include this information in the totals, because I think its another way of looking at the minutes.

First of all I'd like to congradulate you on this project. This must be very time consuming, so thanks for sharing this :)
The numbers are very interesting and I have to say, looking at comaprisons for Clark, it's great to see his screen time this season rising back to what it used to be.

It's also interesting that Chloe & Lana's appearances in episodes switch. In the first few season Lana is in every episode until S5 and onwards which she misses a few. With Chloe it's the opposite. In the early seasons being in 21 eps until S5 where she became a part of every episode. Interesting.

Thanks, and you're welcome. Its a labor of love. :)

You'd think with the numbers, you'd be able to pinpoint what caused numbers to raise and fall, but its not that easy. I believe that GA in S6, and Kara in S7 had a direct impact on Clark's screentime numbers, but not so much the other characters. But thats just my theory.

Thanks for taking the time to do all of this. You're awesome! :-)

However, numbers are not my thing and when I started reading this entry, my head started to swim with all of these facts and figures and I think it came close to exploding. ;-)

The bottom line that sticks out to me though is that Tom used to have a TON of screentime, in Seasons 6 & 7 it went down significantly, and now in Season 8 it's back up. Yay for Season 8!

I'm not sure numbers are my thing either, LOL

I'm going to post about my thoughts on the last part of S2 in the next day or two, and that should be more up your alley :)

And yes, it used to be a ton of Clark. Now, not so much.

Sweet. I adore this project of yours.

Glad you enjoy it :) If anyone can get something out of this, it makes me happy.

I'm not really a numbers person but I find this fascinating the drop off of some the characters is astonishing.
Dec. 17th, 2008 05:32 pm (UTC)
Until starting this, I didn't think I was a numbers person either. But it all started with me wanting to prove that there was a lot less Clark on screen. I think I've achieved that goal, and then some. LOL
Dec. 18th, 2008 12:08 am (UTC)
I kept complaining about Clark's progressively reduced screen time and people kept telling me that I was just imagining it. I'll never thank you enough for giving proof of something that was always clear, and really disappointing, to me.
And thank you for undertaking and sharing this huge project!

Carol, that alone is reason enough for me to do this. So that people can't tell us that we're crazy because we can tell that there's less Clark on screen than there used to be. Its the whole reason I started this, and I'm so thrilled to feel validated by the data.

I also think less Clark has contributed greatly to some of the decline in the show overall. It seems to me that when the focus was much more tightly focused on Clark, the show just had a better, more cohesive flow.

And one of the things I noticed when doing S2 was that it felt very much like a Kent family/Luthor family show. And as much as I've enjoyed this season, I think thats what the show was meant to be all along.

Hi, Sweetie, just wanted to say Happy Birthday (since I'll prolly be running around and likely to forget on the 20th).
