OK, not as funny as I'd first hoped :/

ETA:  Well, darn, it looks like the numbers were better then inititally reported.  The link has updated.  But still, I'll let the post stand.  I still feel the same way, and for all the hype, you'd really think the show was a ratings smash...but, not so much.

Oh Yes!!  Miss Dawn continues to be made of FAIL.

Now, let me be clear, I know people enjoy Gossip Girl, and thats cool.  But I just can't root for the show due to the ludicrous pimping it gets from the CW, from Dawn Ostroff, and the fact that the actors are in every single publication I pick up, and I'm sick to death of seeing them.  Endless pimping, and showing up at every grocery store opening to get your face in a paper or magazine are 2 sure ways of turning me right off.

Now, fingers crossed that 90210 get similarly disappointing numbers.

My Smallville and Supernatural were so badly neglected by the CW, and by Dawn-the-Horrible, that I just find myself feeling very vengeful.  It's probably not my best look, but I just can't help it.

And I think the thing for me is that I do believe SV and SPN will probably suffer some from the neglect, and I think both would've been far more viable with some support from the network.  SPN, because its a good, solid show with 2 very attractive leads.  And SV, because I do think if they publicized what they are planning to do with Clark this season, they would attract some people that may have drifted away.

Alas, it looks like it was updated, and maybe its numbers aren't that bad? Unless I'm misreading it... I think 3.4 million viewers is approaching some SV episodes, isn't it?
Sep. 2nd, 2008 04:50 pm (UTC)
Well, Damn! At least SV has never had that sort of numbers for a premiere.
Sep. 2nd, 2008 04:54 pm (UTC)
True. It's possible people just tuned in for the premiere, and won't stick around. We'll see. Like you, I have nothing against "Gossip Girl," but I take strong exception to the way the CW promotes it and 90210 and hardly acknowledges the existence of SPN and SV.

The people whose faces I'm tired of seeing everywhere: The stupid people from The Hills. I really don't see what all the hype is about. In my mind there just a bunch of no talent media whores. No offense to anyone who is a fan...:-)

I agree with you that Dawn appears to have no idea what she's doing and I'm not trying to defend her at all. However, I do wonder if it's fair to compare The CW on the same scale as networks like NBC or CBS. In my opinion, The CW is still considered a new, struggling network so what would be cancellation-worthy ratings for a show like Lost or CSI might actually be solid numbers for a show on The CW. It's all relative, ya know? :-)

Ugh, I totally agree with you about The Hills. But GG is really just as bad (particularly here in NY), and I expect 90210 to approach that level of obnoxious.

I'm of two minds. Part of me wants GG and 90210 to fail, fail, fail. And then I think, well won't that make the network cave?

And that would leave me without my beloved SV or SPN.

So I am secretly hoping they do well enough to keep my shows on the air. When my shows finish their run? Our alliance crumbles.

I think no matter what happens, the network will finish out this season. I think the question will be if it gets another season. But I think pulling the plug in the middle of the season is very unlikely. I want SV to come to an end this year, so I just need it to get through its season. I know the CW collapsing would end SPN, but then again, I'd rather it have a strong, creative run that ends strong then to be unceremoniously dumped when Dawn can finally get her way...and thats exactly what I believe she wants.
Sep. 2nd, 2008 05:14 pm (UTC)
See, my investment is slightly different. I feel strongly that SV should end this year so SV isn't as effected as say, SPN. SPN wants a five year run. We're heading into S4. I want that final season to come through.

So I really want the CW to hold on until both shows can finish for me. I am very selfish :)
Sep. 2nd, 2008 05:26 pm (UTC)
Nah, not selfish, understandable. I just believe though that Dawn is looking for any excuse to pull the rug out from under SPN. And I suspect if she does well with 90210 & GG, she'll believe she can afford to rid herself of SPN. It would be crazy unfair, but I really do think thats how she operates.
Sep. 2nd, 2008 05:11 pm (UTC)
I'm wondering about that too, what's the extent of GG and the Hills shows' ratings affecting the network as a whole?
Sep. 2nd, 2008 05:15 pm (UTC)
Yeah I really don't know. I just want both of my shows to have their full run. For me, that means SV through S8 - I'm not keen for a S9 - and SPN to end with the pre-set 5 year run.
Sep. 2nd, 2008 05:28 pm (UTC)
I'm sure their goals are modest by network standards. But they have to pouring a ton of money into promoting GG and 90210. At some point, they are going to need some sort of numbers to justify the expense.
Sep. 2nd, 2008 05:40 pm (UTC)
The Hills actually airs on MTV (I think). :-)
Sep. 2nd, 2008 05:51 pm (UTC)
*facepalm* Total brain freeze moment there.
Sep. 2nd, 2008 06:02 pm (UTC)
Well, with all the promotion they got, those GG numbers are not that good. What would have been the numbers without the hype? I just saw a GG pic of naked girls on the beach in TV Guide. I guess they're also after the horny teenager.

I won't ever understand why they didn't even show Clark yet for next season. So far, the spoiler-free have seen a picture of the JL in TV Guide and a trailer of the JL. For God's sake! Am I the only one to think it's weird? I know "A hero is lost". Well, I don't think they can afford not showing their best asset for the show. Ooops! Sorry. maybe it's just me.
Sep. 2nd, 2008 06:10 pm (UTC)
Well, if it takes this much hype to get that number, then I can't even imagine what it would be without the hype.

I understand that SV is an 8 year old show. Really, I get it. I just think they have certain things they could advertise this year that could attract some attention. But you aren't going to attract much attention if the casual viewer has no clue.
Sep. 2nd, 2008 06:32 pm (UTC)
I just don't understand why the CW isn't promoting the heck out of it's (correct me if I'm wrong here) most successful show. And SPN has got so many fans, that may not be in the demographic that Dawn except or is targeting, but surely it deserves some love too?
Sep. 2nd, 2008 06:38 pm (UTC)
I'm not suggesting that SV & SPN get the same amount of ludicrious hype. And I can never picture their casts doing the same amount of self-pimping that the GG does. But is it too much to ask for something? anything? I realize Dawn wants certain shows to do well, but isn't it good for the network overall for A FEW shows to do well? I just don't get the thinking. Or lack thereof.

Thanks, I'm glad you like that avi. Clark is a world champion pouter, and that pose is so perfect.

Right, I forgot to mention EHC and The Game. And like I said, I'm not expecting the same amount of fanfare. But can you not ignore the other shows entirely? It just builds up all this resentment from other fans...fans that are actually watching something on your network. How is that good business? It just isn't.
Sep. 2nd, 2008 11:54 pm (UTC)
I love Gossip Girl but I totally agree with you. SV and SPN get better ratings and they get none of the hype I don't get it.
Sep. 3rd, 2008 12:14 am (UTC)
I think I wouldn't resent GG so much if they hadn't saturated so much with the publicity. As it is now, I don't think I could even force myself to sit through an episode. I just resent the hell out of it.
Sep. 3rd, 2008 12:40 am (UTC)
Yeah I can see that. I think there was a lot riding on this show for Ms.Dawn so that doesn't help.
Sep. 5th, 2008 01:41 am (UTC)
It's sad how they ignore SV and SPN, which are their cash cows. :(

I can't stand Dawn Ostraff. I give the network 3 more years, MAX.
