Need Opinions on Screentime Project

OK folks, I'm going to need a bit of input on this one.  I keep going back and forth, and I'd like to know what others would do.

I've started doing the screentime minutes for S4.  Did you know Clark had over 30m of screentime in Devoted ?  Holy Crap, I was really surprised.  And My God, but there was SO much more fun and smiling, and sunshine.   Clark smiles!!  ALL THE TIME!!  There was even *gasp*  Humor!  I'll never diss S4 again.  I miss it!

Oh, anyway, sorry, got off track.  My question concerns the episode Transference which is next up.  Now, my general policy for a characters screentime minutes is it has to actually be the character.  In other words, Brainiac impersonating Kara in Arctic does not count as screentime for Kara (though I do count it towards LV).  BUT, if a character is possesed, like with Zod possessing Lex in Zod, that does still count as Lex screentime, because Lex is still there.  Just possessed.

Which, brings me to my Transference dilemna.  When Clark and Lionel switch bodies, would that be considered a possesion?  Or do they actually switch bodies completely, so that when Clark post-transference is on screen, thats Lionel screentime?  And when Lionel post-transference is on screen, that would be Clark screentime? (of course, screentime for the actors is not effected by this).

So, if you were me, and you were engaged in this amazingly anal and obsessive endeavor, what would you do?

And I swear, 30+ minutes in Devoted.  Yeesh!

ETA:  Looking at the responses I got so far, which are all in agreement, I think I'm going with total body switch, which means once the transference occurs, its Lionel screentime with TW is on screen, and Clark screentime when JG is on screen.  This one is going to take a while to do, LOL

I would count it as Lionel time when Lionel is in Clark's body yet still attribute that time to Tom Welling. And then Clark time when Clark is in Lionel's body and give that time to JG. I would do this based on your Brainiac/Kara approach because really Lionel is impersonating Clark using Clark's body. Just my thoughts!

Thanks for your thoughts. I was leaning that way myself, but its good to have affirmation. :)

I love Devoted! \o/ And yeah, S4 isn't really that bad when you take all the following seasons into account. :/

As for your dilemma, I'd go with post-transference Clark as Lionel time and vice versa. I don't think it counts as possession, since both of them have completely switched bodies. There's no more of their previous selves in each other, if that makes any sense.

Devoted is positively darling. I love it. And it makes me laugh out loud. And Chloe is very heartbreaking at the end.

And yup, you make perfect sense.

I would say that it's Clark time when Clark is in Lionel and Lionel time when Lionel is in Clark.

That seems to be the consensus opinion, and I think mine as well. Thanks for chiming in.

I actually didn't hate s4. *ducks* Like you said, Clark was smiling. I miss him smiling. He used to be so happy! Plus, I love the Clark-Lois banter. Those two were funny!

And I have to agree with what redteekal said about screen times. :D

No need to duck here. I actually like S4. Its fun, and visually stunning, and Clark is so bouncey. Yeah, the tatoo stuff is a bit out there, and the crystal stuff doesn't make much sense. But S4 really had a sense of fun and lightness, and a real camraderie among the cast. I like it a lot. Certainly more then the seasons that followed it.

Clark and Lois are really very cute in the beginning of S4. I'm not sure why they go so far away from their relationship. They were doing everything right, and I don't know why they veered away from it. And Clark just glows in S4. I don't understand why they made him so sad and defeated.

And yeah, everyone seems to be on the same page with Transference.

I think you're onto something there. Or maybe they thought things were moving too fast with the Clois stuff? I don't know. I just thought that it clicked pretty well, and they seem to have forgotten the formula.

But then again, while rewatching S4, I could say that about a lot of things.

I loved S4 and Devoted and Transference are favorites. S4 also had the added bonus of Lana having a separate story line from Clark so, it's so much easier to fast forward through her scenes! lol
About Transference, I thought (and I'm the only one!) that Lionel in Clark should be counted as Clark because the other characters see him as Clark and he lives Clark's life; but of course, I have no problem with the other approach!

I just finished up on Transference, and my love for this episode knows no bounds. I ADORE it. Its my 2nd fav episode of the entire series. TW isn't just good...he's incredible in this episode. Love it so much.

I did decide to go with the majority opinion on the screentime, but you raised one of the issues that was also nagging at me. In the end, I had to make a judgement call.

You know the show has gone downhill when we're remembering S4 with fondness. Heh.

But ya, there's a lot going for this season. The lightheartedness worked, TW was gorgeous as ever, and Clark was actually allowed to smile and be funny and playful in more than one paltry ep. The early eps of Lois, in partcular, were fantastic, and 'Transference' remains one of the series best.

Man. Please just let Clark have a few of these playful, fun moments next season. Stupid, stupid writers.

Total Word to your last sentence!! He smiles all the damned time in S4. He has a balance between worrying about the bigger things, and being allowed to have fun. There's a playfulness in the whole season that I've rewatched so far (up to Spell).

If you ever wonder why the last 2 seasons feel so off, all you need to do is go back and watch the earlier seasons. All thats missing and has been lost is very evident.

Yay for over 30 min. of screentime for Clark in one episode! Now I understand why I always enjoy re-watching Devoted!

Well then, you must also like Gone (22+m) and Jinx (24+m). I've done the first 8 eps of S4 so far, and Clark hadn't had less then 15m in any ep so far.

I thought Season 4 was great! I've been rewatching scenes and I'm in love with it again. I remember the producers saying that it was time for the cast to have fun again and we got some silly, but entertaining episodes! The end scene between Lois and Clark in Facade, one of my favourites! Devoted was great, the first time I liked Chloe because of Alison's performance, the dance in Spirit! Gorgeous stuff.

Sorry if this isn't the place for it but I'm sure you've heard about Justin Hartley's return. I bring this up because I'm wondering was it you that posted on Watch with Kristin's site? I remember reading Valerie's thoughts and wasn't sure if it was you although it sounded like you!

Re: Kel
Honestly, I am really feeling a lot of love for S4 right now. I think the season gets a bad rap. Its a lot of fun, and funny. When was the last time SV allowed itself to be funny?

I did post on Watch with Kristen's site, so yes, I was probably that Valerie. I don't mean any offence to JH, or his portrayal of Oliver. I just think him being a regular in S8 is bad news for Clark. And Clark is why I watch this show.

I've always loved S4. :D It's just so wacky with the whole witch and crystal stones stuff, but so fun at the same time too. Clark had the chance to explore new dynamics with people like Bart, Lois and Alicia who really let him loose up, and he got to play football at last lol. Jason's should've been a fun character to play him off Clark too, but oh well.

And Devoted's definitely a hoot.

Let me just put it this way...I think S4 is a lot more like what this show should be then S6 & S7. Yes, the tatoo and stones is campy and nonsensical. But the show still had a heart, and a sense of humor. Both of which seem to be sorely missing of late.

Just wanted to say this literally made me laugh out loud. It's amazing what hindsight will do! I think there might be a reason I only own seasons 1-4 right now.

Oh and I agree with the consensus about Transference.

I'm 3/4 of the way through S4, and I'm just amazed at how different the tone of the show is. I just watched Spirit last night, and its so funny! Can you imagine SV doing an episode like that now? And really, why not? What happened to humor?
