TV Watching Update

Since I'm home sick, and not doing much of anytyhing, I thought I'd write up a TV Watching Update

2011 Emmy Awards

Why do the Emmys always make me cringe? I thought Jane Lynch was a decent host, but the musical numbers, the Jersey spoof, and the "Emmytones" (OMG, the worst!) were awful. Who gets paid to come up with this crap? And why is it even necessary? Just give out the damned awards! Was very happy to see Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Margo Martindale (Justified) and the always likeable Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) win. I never saw FNL, but who can root against Kyle Chandler? I was unhappy that Steve Carrell never was honored for his role on The Office, Kate Winslett won for the insufferable Mildred Pierce mini, and that Man Men won over Game of Thrones. Though none of these came as surprises.

Favorite dresses: Martha Plimpton, Sofia Vergara, Evan Rachel Wood, Lena Headey, Gretchen Mol, Nina Dobrev

Least favorite dresses: Julianna Marguiles (and terrible hair too), Drew Barrymore, Zooey Deschanel, Gwyneth Paltrow

The nights best looking man : Timothy Olyphant. Smoking!

The Playboy Club

I didn't watch it, and have no intention of watching it until Cassidy Freeman shows up. But from what I've hard, ratings were terrible, so now I'm wondering if its even going to last long enough for her to show up

Glee

I didn't watch all of it. I caught the last 20 minutes, then sort of FF'ed through the stuff I missed. I liked MyQuinn joining "the Skanks", though I know there's no point in thinking there's a real story here, so why bother? I find Rachel/Kurt scenes unbearably cloying, and it seems like this season is going to be chock full of them, so I don't see me tuning in regularly. Equally as "nails-on-a-chalkboard" annoying were the Will/Emma scenes. They just don't make an interesting twosome for me, and they turned Emma from being endearingly quirky to seriously stunted. I guess I missed why Santana and Brittany are cheerios again, or was that just glossed over? My favorite musical number was Darren Criss channeling Tom Jones for "Its Not Unusual". I'm glad they are phasing Lauren out, as I found her unlikeable to the extreme. I'm feeling that same way about Becky, though I suppose its un-PC to admit you don't like a character that has Downs Syndrome.

Ringer, Ep 2

Oy Vey! This is not a good show. It apparently fancies itself as some sort of Hitchcockian suspense thriller, but the barrage of "twists" just seem a bit ridiculous to me. And SMG just seems completely over her head with the material. Ioan Gruffudd continues to be the most interesting actor in the cast. Sadly, Nestor Carbonell seems to be consigned to scenes of him showing up, being suspicious. I'm not sure why I'll continue watching this, but some part of me really wants to see it improve.

New Girl premiere

Zooey Deschanel is a very polarizing type of actress, but I happen to like her. And the show was fine. However, here's the problem....I didn't laugh. Was it mildly amusing? Sure. Was it funny? Well, not all that much. The funniest actor on the show was Damon Wayans Jr (who looks like a clone of his father), but he had to bow out of the show after the pilot, and won't be around come ep 2. I did get a kick out of her model best friend too. I'll keep watching it, until Justin Long shows up. Then I think I'll have to bow out, since I just dislike him that much.

Sons of Anarchy, ep 3

I can see this is going to be a roller coaster season for me. I didn't like the premiere at all, really liked episode 2, and just wanted to smack a bunch of people in episode 3. I really, really want Clay to die this season. I think it would be a great shot of creative energy for the show, and I'm just not sure what else there is to do with a character this unlikeable. Though to be honest, "likeable" is a relative term for a show about a biker gang that runs guns, kills people, and now is going to traffic drugs for a Mexican cartel. And Jax, who is our protagonist, is harder and harder to root for. He just makes these completely boneheaded decisions that make absolutely no sense. Its better for him to make money running drugs for a Mexican cartel then let his doctor fiancee support them for a while? And everytime Jax lies to Opie, I kind of hate him. Because I love Opie, and Opie really trusts and supports Jax, and its just not fair. And I don't get Tara. I understand she loves Jax, and wants a family with him, but at what cost? She can't buy the kids a new hi-chair without Jax's OK? WTF is that? She's making a doctors salary? Why is up to Jax what she buys the kids, and what she doesn't? I'd like to see her emerge stronger, and more independent, and I'd like to see her tell Jax how its going to be from time to time. She's such a limp dishrag.

And if I was Gemma, and Clay put hands on me, I'd put a steak knife in his arthritic hand at dinner.

The actors playing Bobby and Opie are really shining this year. And I'm interested in the new storyline for Juice. And the actor playing the Fed is doing an amazing job.

True Blood, the finale

Through the years, I've watched this show off and on, but I really got into this year. But as this season came to a close, I was a little ambivalent. Sookie suddenly being torn between Eric and Bill never felt organic to me. However, if that leads to an Eric/Bill buddy team next season, I'm looking forward to that. No show is ever made better by Scott Foley showing up. And I like Terry and Arlene, so if he's here to cause them trouble, I'm already hating him. Jason and Jessica are a surprisingly good pair, though I felt bad for Hoyt. I'm not sure how I'm feeling about this Lafayette is a medium stuff. I was sorry to see Jesus go. Is Tara really dead? Well, I hope so. She's always worked my last nerve. But my favorite potential for next season? Sam and Alcide as friends. I hope they keep that going. I think Sam is probably my favorite True Blood character, though Eric is the hottest.

Archer, season premiere

Funny! OMG, can Patrick Warburton do a voice over on every show? I love him.

and the "Emmytones" (OMG, the worst!) were awful.

Pointless and not even cute. I would've gladly taken one performance by them versus those bumpers.

I never saw FNL, but who can root against Kyle Chandler?

Same here. I've never watched an ep but I was a fan since "Hometown" and "Early Edition". He just seems like just an all around nice guy.

I was unhappy that Steve Carrell never was honored for his role on The Office,

I thought for sure he would get it because as much as the FNL wins were deserved, I felt they were more of a going away gift and I thought they'd do the same w/ Carrell.

Favorite dresses: Martha Plimpton, Sofia Vergara, Evan Rachel Wood, Lena Headey, Gretchen Mol, Nina Dobrev

ITA.

Least favorite dresses: Julianna Marguiles (and terrible hair too), Drew Barrymore, Zooey Deschanel, Gwyneth Paltrow
Again, I agree. Gwyneth deserves her own category because there was no excuse for how she looked.

I didn't watch it, and have no intention of watching it until Cassidy Freeman shows up. But from what I've hard, ratings were terrible, so now I'm wondering if its even going to last long enough for her to show up

I hope so. I happened to like it, but I don't what kind of competition they're up against. Surely "Castle" isn't taking their audience away.

Ringer, Ep 2

Oy Vey! This is not a good show. It apparently fancies itself as some sort of Hitchcockian suspense thriller, but the barrage of "twists" just seem a bit ridiculous to me. And SMG just seems completely over her head with the material.

I swear they pipe up the music on that show to distract from the lack of plotting and not so great acting.

New Girl premiere

Zooey Deschanel is a very polarizing type of actress, but I happen to like her. And the show was fine. However, here's the problem....I didn't laugh. Was it mildly amusing? Sure. Was it funny? Well, not all that much.

I laughed. Not a lot, but I can see me getting there. It's that she's so awkward. That's the comedy to me.

The funniest actor on the show was Damon Wayans Jr (who looks like a clone of his father), but he had to bow out of the show after the pilot, and won't be around come ep 2.

I hate that they lost him. I really ejnjoy him.

No show is ever made better by Scott Foley showing up.

LMAO! Burn!

Archer, season premiere

Funny! OMG, can Patrick Warburton do a voice over on every show? I love him.

I just hope it's not as dark as last season. I found alot of last season's storylines just so dark and odd and unfunny.

I was so sad to see Joel McHale as one of the "Emmytones", because this is the sort of crap that he should be mocking on Talk Soup.

I have to admit, Eddie Cibrian is a big problem for me on The Playboy Club. I just don't like his smarmy ass.

Back when I watched Felicity, I was always Team Ben, and I prefer my Scotts with the last name Speedman.

Archer did get dark as the season went on. I'm with you in that I hope they lighten it up, and go heavy on the ridiculous.

I'm very underwhelmed by television in general. But, I feel a bit like "Its not you, its me" when it comes to the shows. Maybe I just have unreachable expectations?

I'm not much of a Jason Dohring fan, so thats not going to help me much. But, I'll take him over the impossibly bland Kristofer Pohlo-whatever. He just needs to go away.

I think one of the problems with SoA is that Jax isn't as much of a touch stone as he once was. At one time, you really felt like he had some sort of code and morality, and you wanted to see him gain control of the club and do something with it. But now, he's kind of lost that for me. His current actions are not at all sympathetic. And really, he can't walk away? Why? Are they trying to convince me that Clay would kill him if he tried? It doesn't even sound believable.

And thanks for the good wishes. Lots of coughing. I hate coughing.

TV-TB-TBall!
I enjoyed the Emmy Telecast, but then I had to switch over to Breaking Bad because the poison is poisoning everybody. This is the one show where I don't want any happy endings for anyone. Send them all to Hell where they belong. Breaking Bad, I mean. You might want all the Emmys to go there. ;-)

I saw New Girl and enjoyed it. Miss Deschanel has some off-beat comic timing and she is very likeable---a sort of Mary Tyler Moore for the 21th century (or at least the first couple of decades of it). And one of her roommates was Damon Wayans' son? No wonder, I liked him so much. He has his daddy's charm and ease. And he is gone from the show? >8-(

I don't read about any of the new shows so I know nothing about them.

I did stumble on Homeland over at Showtime. I like Damien Lewis' underplaying and Claire Danes' was made to play an intelligent woman character---you can see her thinking and evaluating her moves. Moreena Baccarin and Mandy Potemkin (although he'll quit after the second season if the show stays on) are in it too. It appears to be what Rubicon thought it was. I'll be watching it. I might pick up that show about poor people too that William Macy is in.

AS for that Playboy thing, No Way will I watch it. Playboy and Hugh Hefner (and you know that he is involved because that is his brand and he is an old creepy sex pervert) offend my feminist sensibilities. And Kirstie Alley starred in the Gloria Steinem, I was a Playboy Bunny for a Magazine Article, miniseries many years and pounds (real pounds, not the ones that she makes up to peddle her poundage and clamage "Make Yourself Another Person" kits) ago. So I will be missing Miss Freeman.

I saw some numbers that showed that that Playboy thing couldn't even match the numbers for that Chase show that it re-placed. Playboy could be another Down the Texas Drain, or whatever that show that Miss Palicki was in before Wonder Woman sank. Is Miss Palicki scheduled to be in the Playboy thing? Ahoy the Titanic!

I'm not going to bother with Ringer. I caught up with Nikita and with all the twists and shifts in that show, it will be on my watch list this next season.

Watch Out for Falling Trees!

My next door neighbor cut down most of his trees. I can see into his backyard now---that's weird. I think that he just didn't want to rake leaves this fall. And that is fine with me, I have to rake his leaves too.

Re: TV-TB-TBall!
I've never watched Breaking Bad, but lots of people really like it. I'm sure its great.

I meant to watch Homeland, but I didn't realize it premiered already. Well, thats what I get for not paying attention.

I'm not so much offended by The Playboy Club, but I think its utterly ridiculous to try and suggest that being a Playboy Bunny is somehow empowering for women in any way. Its not. Never was, never will be.

Trees, the price we pay for privacy from our neighbors. LOL

Re: TV-TB-TBall!
Homeland premieres Oct 2 or 4, sometime then. They have a Pre-Premiere on the Showtime site that I watched. So all is not Lost for you, yet.

Cass is in episode three of Playboy Club, and if it gets cancelled the new trend seems to be to show what there was rather than get rid of it immediately, so I suspect we'll see what she filmed. She wasn't going to be sticking around anyway, since Longmire got picked up.

As for New Girl, I hated the show, but it wasn't just about Zooey. Her character is awful, but I did like her in Tin Man so I guess I'm one of those on the fence about her.

Well, I'd love to see Cass. And since Longmire seems like it won't be filming until next year, I figured she could be on a bunch of eps. But, we'll see...

I just think I'm not cut out for sitcoms of any type.

Thanks, today was a better day. I think I'm on the road to a full recovery.

Well, here's the thing with Ringer, we know this is going to go on all season, so all this "Oh no, the jig is up" stuff is so ridiculous. And its just not well done.

I think the difference with Revenge was that it took a more subtle approach. Though I could've done without the flash forward in the beginning. I also think the lead actress just feels like a better fit for the material then SMG. It doesn't hurt that its got some really A actors playing the villians.

I think Pan Am looks like a lot of fun, but as with everything, its all in the execution. Crossing my fingers too.

So sorry you're still sick!

I tried to watch the Emmys, but I thought it was awful from the start, and when the Emmytones showed up, I bailed. I followed along on Twitter instead, and went back later to FF to the parts that sounded good. I was over the moon about Kyle Chandler (!!!), Peter Dinklage and Margo Martindale.

I'm not a fashion person, but I thought Nina Dobrev was breathtaking. She always looks stunning on the red carpet. She either has great taste or a great stylist. :)

I detest Eddie Cibrian, and I don't buy what all the actresses on The Playboy Club have been saying in interviews, that the show is all about female empowerment. *rolls eyes* The premise just doesn't interest me at all.

I watched all of Glee, but the only part I truly enjoyed was Darren Criss's It's Not Unusual number. Lea Michele continues to make me want to throw things, on and off the show.

Ringer made me laugh. There were so many moments of manufactured suspense, where you were supposed to think Bridget was going to get caught, that it became ridiculous. Not to mention the plot holes you could drive a truck through. I still like SMG, though, and I love Ioan Gruffudd, so I'll keep watching for now. It was so bizarre that they chose that old Lifehouse song to play during Bridget's scene with Juliet. I had a major Smallville flashback.

I like Zooey Deschanel, too, and I was charmed by New Girl, but I totally get what you're saying about it not being that funny. I think Damon Wayans Jr. is a huge loss, but I'll continue to tune in to see how the other characters develop.

I marathoned this season of True Blood, and I agree with pretty much everything you said. I liked the bloodbath the finale turned out to be, and I, too, hope Tara is dead, although they've already confirmed the actress is in S5. Loved Alcide altogether (and especially with Sam), so much that I want him to stay far away from Sookie. He deserves better. And yes, Eric is definitely the hottest.

I saw the screener version of Revenge first, and Marc Blucas played Amanda's dad in that one. I vastly preferred him, but evidently he had a conflict because of Necessary Roughness, and they decided he was too young anyway (which makes me think they intend to have the character show up, not dead after all, in the present timeline). I loved Revenge, and I was happy to see it held its own against the considerable competition in the ratings.

The one thing that has been a revelation to me with the start of this new season is how little I care about any show that doesn't have Tom Welling in it. I knew I would miss him, but I never anticipated how much.

Thanks, but its not your fault. Got my Luthor discs!! Thanks!!!

Nina Dobrev looked amazing. Why is she going out with that smirky dude? LOL

Eddie Cibrian is very detestable. Its a shame, he didn't use to be. I loved him on that alien invasion show that only lasted a year. But now I can't stand his face. And I truly do think his casting hurt the show overall, because he's got a lot of haters out there.

I find Lea Michele incredibly irritating. And now my irritation for Rachel has extended to Kurt. And I've never liked Finn. Its sort of hard to enjoy Glee when the characters you watch for are Quinn, Puck, Tina, Mike, Santana and Brittney. And I do like Darren Criss, but Blaine is such a Gary Stu. They need to make him a real boy one of these days.

Personally, I want to know how tiny little SMG managed to get the dead weight of a grown man into a trunk. And then when she's scrubbing the blood on the floor, and no one is noticing? Its dumb. And dumb isn't necessarily a bad thing, if the show had a bit more fun with itself. But it doesn't. It takes itself as serious as a heart attack.

Sookie and Alcide don't work for me at all. And you know she's eventually going to be back with Eric or Bill anyway, so why bother going there?

I actually really like the actor that played Amanda's dad on Revenge, James Tupper. I think he's so handsome. So, it he's coming back, I'm very pleased with that. And I really thought the childhood friend was cute. I'm interested to see more of him. But the show just clicked for me. I'm excited to see it next week.

I think when you really get excited about an actor in a show, and you watch him for years, and then that goes away, its a big letdown. Because nothing equals that intensity. Hopefully, someone will come along that will light that spark again, for both of us.

Did Glee not mention Sam at all? I know there was bad blood with the actor but still: nasty. As usual the plot was a mixture of reboot + random + redux. And Mercedes and Tina should have shared the last number

I'll watch at least one ep of Playboy Club for CF & might give Secret Circle a try this week.

Favorite dresses: Martha Plimpton, Sofia Vergara, Evan Rachel Wood, Lena Headey, Gretchen Mol, Nina Dobrev
The first two topped my list as well - made me remember MO dressing all "anti-fashion" at the Oscars with River Phoenix way back when. She looks amazing now. Glad that Raising Hope was renewed.

They did briefly mention Sam. Just to say that his dad got a job in another state, and he moved.

Its great to see Martha get a resurgence in her career. I always thought she was very talented, but I felt her unconventional looks kept her from getting the roles she deserved.

Seriously..just watch FNL.
I've seen some of GoT and it's great..but not sure if it's better than Mad Men..which this past season was weaker than FNL..I would've given the latter the main emmy and Mad Men writing for the best hour of tv ever.

I was ecstatic at Kyle Chandler though...and yea bummer on Steve Carell.

Were the emmytones bad? I was flipping between emmys and the Falcons so I missed most of them.

I also liked Amy Poehler's idea of the pageant thing.

Done with Glee for the most part..Quinn seems to be getting an arc...but a badly written one I'd bet.

I haven't seen FNL, so I can't comment on that. I have tried Mad Men, and ya know, I just don't like it. I find it slow, and the characters thoroughly unlikeable. So, its appeal just eludes me.

The Emmytones were awful My God, how embarassing for those actors.

The best comedy actress thing was one of my favorite parts of the night.

The way I watch Glee is that I DVR it, and then I FF through it and just watch the stuff that involves characters I like. I can't get invested in the Quinn storyline, as much as I love her, because I know the show is going to screw her over in the end. Because she's not one of the "chosen" ones, i.e. Rachel, Kurt, Blaine

True Blood
I was happy to see a review on my personal favorite series show, thanks for that! I agree with you on the subject of Sam! It' s his turn to have a relationship of substance. He more than deserves one after managing his servers and restaurant! Not a bad catch and can be your best friend, too. Ha ha! Woof! I don't see Sookie without the dynamic of a best friend as we get a lot of her personal secrets through Tara. Now, I think most of us can agree on Erik! Ye-ow!
