Time to Update the LJ

Hey Everyone :) So, its been forever, but really, I couldn't think of much to say.

So, lets see....

I spent a long weekend in Maryland with my sister visiting with latxcvi which was a lot of fun.  I did leave my credit card in a restaurant on the last night we were there, which is something I have never done in my life, but I realized it pretty quickly, and the restaurant held on to it, so alls well that ends well.  I got to see the Aquarium, and I always love an Aquarium.  I find them very soothing.

I went to a taping of the new Anderson Cooper daytime talkshow.  At my taping, they interviewed the family of Amy Winehouse, which ended up being the first episode aired.  Yes, they did flash on me in the audience.  As for the show, I thought Anderson was very adorable, and very likeable.  My feelings on the Winehouse family are a bit mixed, as I felt there was a whole lot of denial going on there.  As talented as I thought Amy Winehouse was, I don't see her death as a tragedy as much as a damned shame.  A tragedy is Natasha Richardson skying with her boys, hitting her head on the bunny hill, and being dead in 2 days.  Someone who destroys their body through drugs and alchohol is a damned shame to me.  At least thats how I see it.  Oh, and Anderson's stage manager guy?  Whoa!  So handsome.

Hurricane Irene blew threw here 2 weeks ago, and another one of our trees fell down

The tree actually fell into the neighbors yard, which as I came to find out, makes it his problem according to the insurance laws.  Did you know that if your neighbors tree falls into your yard, even hits your house, its your tree now?  Well, thats how they do it.  But, I didn't feel right about that, so I paid to have the tree removed and am now in the process of trying to get money back from both of the involved insurance companies.  Between dealing with them, and dealing with tree guys, and dealing with my neighbors, its been a bit stressful.

Oh, I have a cold.  Just thought I'd throw that in.

Sons of Anarchy returned last week, and I didn't much care for the season premiere.  But I did like the 2nd episode quite a lot.  I'm easy, give me lots of Jax and Opie interacting, and I'm a happy camper.  I really like Jax as a character, but sometimes I think he's an idiot.  I can't stand Clay.  And I still can't warm up to Tara one iota.

I gave the season premiere of Ringer a try, as I'm desperately hoping to find a few new shows to sink my teeth into this fall.  But I was underwhelmed.  For one thing, I thought Sarah Michelle Geller was terribly miscast.  I didn't buy her as a former addict/stipper, or a NY socialite.  She just doesn't seem to have enough presence.  There are some good actors involved, namely Ioan Gruffudd and Nestor Carbonell, and Mike Colter is very attractive.  But that Kristoffer Polaha person leaves me ice cold.  And the actress playing the stepdaughter was terrible.  And my God, the effects when they were in the boat?  Laughably bad.  I do see some glimmer of hope for this series, but I can't say it had me at hello, if you know what I mean.

The crop of designers on this years Project Runway is underwhelming.

I sort of slacked off on my random Smallville rewatch.  I think I just got bored with it.  I still miss Tom Welling something terrible, and I'm crazy angry with him for not having a job right now that will put his pretty face back on a big, or small, screen.

So, check in and let me know what you've been doing.  Tell me what shows you'll be watching this fall.  Tell me what trips you have planned.    I miss chatting with my flist.

Very annoying about your tree.

I won't watch Ringer - the premise sounds too convoluted & daft. Will likely give Grimm a look, and the show that sounds like an adult version of Glee (Jack Davenport, Debra Messing)

I still miss Tom Welling something terrible, and I'm crazy angry with him for not having a job right now that will put his pretty face back on a big, or small, screen.
It would be nice to have at least a career update of some sort...and man, do I wish he'd at least consider doing a Con. Having watched the SV panel have such a fun time at DCon, made me think what an amazing panel Tom could give, with Michael, or on his own, whatever.

Your trip to Maryland sounds fun. I'm hoping to get a last bit of canoeing/hiking/biking in this weekend before the cold sets in.

Oh, and one of my cats dropped a claw sheath which just speared my foot & hurts like a mofo.

Glad you made it through Irene safe and sound!

I have Ringer on my DVR and I haven't watched it yet, but they cast Jason Dohring, who I worship adore, so there's that going for the show. I too need a new show to fan and love! I'm hoping Vampire Diaries comes back strong this season as well. Damon. <3

As for myself, I'm slowly settling into my new career and plugging away at starting my novel. Slow going, in between kids and school online, but I'm trying!

*HUGS* Always nice to see you.

Well, safe and mostly sound anyway. LOL

I so admire your new career choice. Amazing! I've often thought of working with animals, but I'm not sure my heart could take it. How's your new dog working out?

And *BIG HUGS* back :)

The deal with the tree is annoying but at least it wasn't any worse than it was. It was awful sweet of you to offer to pay your neighbors for the hassle.

I watched Ringer the other night but I'm not sure how I feel about it just yet either. Something didn't feel right about it but I'll still give it a go for a few more weeks. Tonight I'm going to give Secret Circle a shot - hopefully it won't suck.

Sounds like you had a fun trip to Maryland - I'm planning on going to Rome in April with redteekal so I'm extremely excited about that one.

What are you other must-see shows of the fall? Curious minds want to know ...
Sep. 16th, 2011 01:44 am (UTC)
It just seemed like the right thing to do, to have the tree taken away. Even my insurance agent was like "wow, you took care of it? It wasn't your responsibility ya know". But I had to be able to live with myself first and foremost.

I think of the things that surprised me about Ringer was that it looked sort of like it was on the cheap, and I wasn't expecting that. I know the Secret Circle isn't for me. I feel like I can't get into shows about teenagers right now.

Rome? Wow, sounds great. Post lots of pictures.

I don't really have any must see shows for fall. I'll watch Supernatural, of course. And I'm going to check out a few things. But really, I feel so underwhelmed by the new shows. And mostly thats due to the casting of a lot of these shows. The leads are so bland and generic to me.
Sep. 15th, 2011 01:50 pm (UTC)
Hi Val!

I'm sorry you had to deal with all of that annoying tree stuff. I'm glad that your house is okay.

I think it's cool that you went to a TV show taping. Back in 2001, I went to a taping of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" when Regis was doing it. That was pretty cool, but it's the only TV show I've ever gone to.

I haven't watched Ringer yet, but I plan to. I think a lot of people are at least going to start out watching it just because of SMG. I guess we'll find out if they decide to stick around.

I plan on watching "The Secret Circle." I hope it's good.

I also wish that Tom Welling would show up on TV or in a movie. Even a small guest-starring type thing. He should play a killer or rapist or something else against type on one of the CSI shows. I don't watch any of them, but I would if he was on it.

Thanks :) I'm glad that my house, and my neighbors house, is OK. The worst would've been for that tree to fall in a different direction, and slam right into a house.

This is the 2nd show I've seen. I saw a taping of David Letterman once, which was lots of fun. I think one of the things that disappointed me about the Anderson Cooper show was how much of it was staged. That was kind of disillusioning.

No more shows about teenagers for me. I just don't feel like I can relate to them anymore. I think Smallville was my last grasp at that age bracket.

I would love for Tom to show up on some TV shows. There's so much out there now. I'd love to see him show up on the Playboy Club, in period clothes, and reteamed with Cassidy. Or dressed as a pilot for Pan Am. But bottom line, I just want to SEE him again.
Sep. 15th, 2011 03:17 pm (UTC)
glad you had a good trip :0)
Sep. 16th, 2011 01:57 am (UTC)
Thanks :) It was fun. Sometimes its just nice to have a weekend away.
Sep. 15th, 2011 05:42 pm (UTC)

We got the tail end of Irene in NJ. Not too much damage just a lot of rain. Me, I'm fine, started taking evening classes and still looking for work. Staying with the cousin from hell though.

Have you heard about Tom being nominated for best superhero in the scream awards? All the other nominees are film heroes and he's there.....I know it's probably because SV has ended but I also know people began to see "superman" in his performance in the last three seasons. This is awesome for him don't you think?
Sep. 16th, 2011 02:03 am (UTC)
Hey there!

Sorry that your home stuff is so stressful. Just keep telling yourself is temporary, and if you can get through this, you can get through anything. LOL

I did hear about Tom's nomination, and I did vote for him. I don't think he has a chance of winning, but I still had to vote for my big guy.
Sep. 15th, 2011 07:35 pm (UTC)
The taping of Anderson Cooper's show sounds exciting. I agree with you about Amy Winehouse. She was very self destructive.

Sorry about hurricane Irene and your house/tree woes. I was in New Orleans for labor day. There was a fabulous rainbow on the way in, some heavy rain and wind gusts but that's about it. Odd timing for a first time visit, but my friends didn't want to change their plans.

I may be going to Harry Potter world for Halloween. That's it for trips right now.

As far as TV goes, I made a list of new shows that I want to watch but I haven't really been in the mood. I'm about to start on Season 2 of Mad Men on DVD. I watched Season 1 of BBC America's Luther which was amazing. I'm totally obsessing over Game of Thrones and the book series it's based on. I dunno if we watch any of the same shows anymore. *sadface*

Sep. 16th, 2011 02:16 am (UTC)
I'm not sure I'd say it was exciting, but it was really interesting. Amazing how they put it all together. I just couldn't quite warm up to the Winehouse family. Its hard to put my finger on it.

Did you love New Orleans? I was there the year before Hurricane Katrina, and it was so much fun. Hotter then the freaking sun, but still fun. So many good restaurants, and the people are super nice. I'll never understand eating beignets and tar-like coffee for breakfast when its 1000F

Harry Potter World sounds like a blast.

I wish I could watch Luther, but I don't get BBC :( I'm so in love with Idris Elba. And I CAN NOT WAIT for next season's Game of Thrones. So, we still have that.

I'm not a huge SMG fan. I have nothing against, and she was a very good lead on Buffy. But beyond that show, I could never quite figure out what role would be a good fit for her.

I plan to check out Revenge, Once Upon a Time and New Girl too. But I think I'm going to pass on Grimm. Its against Supernatural, and I feel like if I DVR it, I'm never going to get around to watching it.

My sister honeymooned in St Lucia and loved it. I hear its gorgeous. I'm off to Turks and Caicos next month and I can't wait to just lie on a beach for 4 days.

A beach house, and a lake house? Cool, when should I be over? ;)

I've been reading off and on lately. I've had Justin Cronin's The Passage on my nightstand for months now, but I still haven't started it.

If I could, and I had the money, I'd travel all the time. I love it. I love hotels, and exploring new places and new shopping and new restaurants. I'm not much for roughing it though.

One of the reasons I wanted to take care of the tree is because I didn't want tension between me and my neighbors. That would just stress me out. And they're nice neighbors, so...

I watched Fringe for about half the first season, but it didn't hold my interest. Its too bad, because I've heard from a lot of people that its turned into a fine show.

Tom on anything would make it must see TV for me. But apparently Tom has decided that working is optional. I was really afraid of this. *sigh*

Well, if surgery is going to make you feel better in the long run, then its a good thing. I'm thinking good thoughts for you.
Sep. 17th, 2011 03:16 am (UTC)
Tree/insurance/neighbours problems are no fun. Ugh. I had a terrible vacation. It started nicely with my neck pain finally going away, but my father was rushed to the hospital and he was told he needed 6 bypasses or basically, he would die. He had his surgery and he's out of the hospital now but that whole ordeal, including taking care of my mother, was super stressful and pain-in-the-neck inducing. To top it off, I fell down a ladder last week and dislocated 2 fingers. It's really freaky to see your fingers in a totally unnatural position. Anyway, all is better now. I had more medical drama in one month then in my whole life to date.
I'm not seeing any new show that I want to watch. I'm going to watch my usual shows: SPN, Bones, Fringe, Modern family, 30 rock. I still haven't watched GoT.
Ah. Tom. I really really wish he will make wise career choices. And do some guest-starring roles. I keep imagining scripts for him in my favorite shows.

Sep. 17th, 2011 03:51 am (UTC)
Oh man, sorry to hear about your string of bad health luck. How's Dad doing now?

When I was a teenager, I was always jamming a finger, or slamming it into something. It is freaky to see your poor fingers all beat up and misshapen.

You must watch GoT! I think you'll love it.

I don't know what Tom's career plans are, but apparently it involves a lot of vacationing and hanging out. Go figure.

Thanks for being such a great host.

Looking forward to it!

That was so sweet of you to pay for the tree to be removed even though you weren't legally responsible. :)

I'm planning a trip to Martha's Vineyard week after next. Never been there, and hoping Tom is still wandering around and I bump into him -- wishful thinking there!

My Smallville rewatching has definitely slacked off. I think the magic is fading a bit for me, or maybe too many years of obsessing burned me out a bit. I hope Tom gets a new project soon.

I'm watching The Vampire Diaries, but haven't watched Ringer yet, though I did DVR it. Heard mostly negative reviews of Ringer. I'm not sure what other shows I plan to watch. I used to watch Supernatural, but I got bored last season towards the end and I'm not sure I'll pick it back up again.

Sep. 17th, 2011 09:06 am (UTC)
Oh, one more thing --- I watched part of the Anderson episode that you went to, that first one about Amy Winehouse. I got the same impression as you about her parents.

I've never been to a live taping of anything!
Sep. 17th, 2011 11:31 pm (UTC)
In think I decided a long time ago that I just needed to do what felt right to me, and worry less about what other people would do, and what was my obligation to do. If that makes sense. Because, in the end, you have to live with yourself. So, I did what felt right.

MV is very nice. Make sure to spend some time in Edgartown. Its very quaint, and a lot less touristy then Vineyard Haven and Oaks Bluff. I know Tom's house is in Vineyard Haven, in a place called the West Chop. I hope you see him! Since its not working, then he should at least stay in MV so you can run into him.

Going to a live taping is a very interesting experiance. If you ever get the chance, do it.

Nice to see you posting here, Val!

It was very nice of you to pay for the removal of the tree. I understand that getting along with the neighbours sometimes requires a certain amount of sacrifice.

Last July I went to Venice and to the Austrian Tyrol and Bavaria. I loved the trip! I always wanted to visit Neuschwanstein and at last I could! Some of the Tyrol and Bavaria villages are like being in a fairy tale (I know it sounds cliché but it's true!) As for Venice, I have to return when it's not so terribly hot there!

I watched Ringer and though I didn't exactly love it I think I'll give it another try. I agree that SMG may not be the better choice for those roles. She was great in Buffy but not everyone is fit for every part. I plan to watch The Secret Circle today.

As for returning shows: I'll be watching next seasons of Boardwalk Empire, the Borgias and The Killing (I guess that'll be a long wait), Fringe (which I really like)... I suppose I'll watch SPN though it's a show I don't care much about. I'll watch some of the new shows' pilots and see if I can find any of them appealing enough. And, of course, I can't wait for Game of Thrones!

The longer I wait the more disheartened I am about Tom's future career. :(
Sep. 17th, 2011 11:35 pm (UTC)
Hey Carol :)

Its nice to be posting, though I generally don't have much of interest to say.

Wow, you've been to some amazing places. My sister and I have wanted to go to Italy for about 3 years now, but the exhange rate between the dollar and Euro is so unfavorable, and it comes down to us being able to get more for our money by staying closer to home. This is a big problem for us since we like really nice hotels which tend to be pricey.

I'm definitely going to watch Boardwalk Empire. I enjoyed the first season quite a bit. Its a complicated story, but I found it really well done. I'm rooting for Steve Buscemi to take home an emmy this year.

I know what you mean about Tom. This is exactly what I was afraid of. I think the longer he stays away, the harder its going to be for him to come back (if he wants to).
Sep. 18th, 2011 08:37 pm (UTC)
I'm with you on Amy Winehouse. Such a tragic waste of an incredible talent. I think that sometimes the same life experiences that create an artist whose performances touch our hearts so profoundly also make them particularly ill-equipped to deal with enormous and sudden success and fame.

I'm fascinated by the technical aspects of producing a TV show, so I think I would enjoy being at a taping just to see all of that. My nephew goes to a performing arts high school, and wants to be a writer or director someday. My sister has been planning a trip to LA with him that includes studio tours and whatever else she can think of to give him a glimpse of the industry, and she was disappointed to find out you have to be 18 to attend a show taping (although I can see why that would be a rule).

Wow, a picture really is worth a thousand words. I totally understand doing what makes you feel right rather than only what your legal obligation is, and I'm sure your neighbors are thankful they live next door to someone as generous as you. I'm so glad the tree didn't fall on someone's house! A friend of my mom's had her house sliced in half by a falling tree in a hurricane. No one was hurt, but it took nearly a year to settle everything and rebuild.

I'm very late commenting here, so I hope your cold is all better now. :)

I didn't love Ringer. As much as I like SMG, I, too, found her hard to believe in either of her roles. Not to mention that the entire premise was pretty ridiculous. I adored KP on LUX, but not here. He played a complete cad, and he displayed none of his usual humor or charm. Another miscast, IMO. However, I love Ioan Gruffudd beyond all reason, and thought he was perfect, so I'll probably watch at least a few more episodes just for him. Maybe it will get better.

As for the boat scene, I wonder if they cut corners to save money on the pilot, thinking CBS would pay for them to upgrade a few scenes if they picked the show up. With the move to the CW, I'm sure there was no budget for anything better, which doesn't bode well for a show that will rely heavily on special effects in any scene in which the twins appear together. We both remember how bad the CGI could be on Smallville.

You know me, I'll be watching lots of shows this fall, but not very many new ones. I loved The Secret Circle (mostly because of Gale Harold), and I'm looking forward to Hart of Dixie. I saw the Revenge pilot and liked it. It's completely over the top, but Emily VanCamp makes it work for me, and I enjoy seeing rich, entitled jerks get theirs. :) The only other new fall show I'll be checking out is Person of Interest.

The returning shows I'm most looking forward to are Parenthood, The Good Wife, Supernatural, Fringe, and Blue Bloods. And a handful of half-hour comedies, but I know you're not into those. :)

I saw that Tom was spotted shopping at J Crew yesterday, so evidently he's still in NYC. It's certainly possible that he's working, but I'm more inclined to think he's moved into the Manhattan stage of his extended vacation. *sigh*
Sep. 20th, 2011 01:27 am (UTC)
I definitely think there's something about some creative people which seems to fuel their need for self destruction. I guess its some kind of karmic balance.

Waching the taping of a TV show is very cool. I've only seen 2, and I imagine watching the taping of a sitcom is a totally different experiance altogether. I think one of the weirdest things is when you see the cameras panning over the audience, right at you, and you are struck with that realization that you might be on TV (and yes, I was :0 ).

I thought Ioan Gruffudd was the best part of the Ringer pilot. He just seems to be acting in a better show that the other actors aren't in. KP is crazy miscast. As popular as SMG remains, I wonder if Ringer will be able to hold onto the regular CW audience, or attract a different one.

I decided to skip Heart of Dixie because I just can't warm to Rachel Bilson. Revenge I'll check out. Person of Interest I'll have to skip over due to a James Cavaziel dislike.

There are so many shows I'd be checking out if not for casting.

I do intend on checking out The New Girl, so if I like it, I'll be watching one 1/2 hr comedy. Yay!

I shop in J Crew all the time. See, Me and Tom are soulmates! :)
