New TV Interest - Glee

I guess I'm a bit late to the party, but I've discovered Glee.  And I really, really adore it.  I bought the first half of the season on DVD, and I've been downloading the 2nd half from iTunes.  I guess I'm a little bit past the halfway point so far.

I blame Comic Con.  I had to sit through the Glee panel because it was between Supernatural and Sons of Anarchy.  And between the clips of the show, the enthusiasm from the crowd, and the panel itself, it peaked my curiousity, and I decided to give it a try.  And boy, its totally addicting.

I do have my issues though, so I'm wondering if I'm going to have trouble with the show over the long haul.  My biggest issue is that I just don't care for the lead character at all, aka Rachel Berry, aka Lea Michele.  There's no doubt that she's a tremendous singer, though she does seem to sing all her songs the very same way...at the top of her lungs.  But I just find the character tiresome, and I'm so much more interested in just about every other female character on the show.  And as for singing, give me Mercedes any way of the week.

And, I'm not overly interested in the most prominent male high schooler, Finn.  I do find him infinitely more interesting when he's far away from Rachel.  I thought the stuff with him and Quinn and Puck was really compelling, and I also like the whole situation he finds himself in with Kurt (who I LOVE!).  And I just don't care much for his voice.  Its lack personality

Other then that though, I LOVE all the other characters.

My other issue with the show is that its a little more shallow then I would like.  I hope in its 2nd season it decides to dig a little deeper into these characters, and doesn't just pick up plotpoints and put them down so randomly (at this point, I find myself really hung up on the fact that I have no idea where Quinn is living, and the show hasn't addressed it at all).  Maybe they want to keep it light so they can fit it into the "comedy" genre, but I'm not really sure it belongs there, since many of the shows most compelling moments are the dramatic ones.

Since I have no connection to any Glee communities, I have no clue what is popular on the show and what isn't.  If I was shipping anyone, it would be Quinn (beautiful girl! she looks like an angel) and Puck.  And Brittany and Santana, because they are hilarious.  And its hard not to root for Emma to finally get her guy.  And on a friendship level, I could watch Kurt/Mercedes scenes all day.

Any scene with Kurt and his father is Gold!

My favorite male singer on the show is Mr Shue.  Mercedes is my favorite female.

And, of course, Sue Sylvester is hysterical and completely offensive in every way.  What a fun, and revolting, character.

So, anyone else watch Glee on my flist?

*raises hand* I'm a Glee watcher!!!
I love Quinn, and I do prefer her to Rachel, but i have to say that Rachel is an OTT character, which is part of the problem for me. She is far more interesting when she's not so OTT. And Finn is adorable and yes a lot more watchable when he's not with Rachel.

As far as the 2nd season goes AFAIK Quinn was living with Puck but then she moved in with Mercedes. Does that help any?

I realize that Rachel is an OTT character, but I don't always find her to be so in an entertaining way. But, it does make me appreciate the times when the focus is elsewhere.

I really enjoyed the stuff with Finn/Quinn/Puck, because I really felt badly for all of them.

So, Quinn moved in with Puck? OK, that hasn't happened yet. I was hoping she'd end up living with Mercedes though, because their budding friendship is really sweet. I hope we get to meet Mercedes' parents eventually. I really like that character.

Thanks for the help :)

I'm watching Glee now too but I missed quite a few episodes at the beginning. I am so confused as to who's baby Quinn is actually carrying? Is it Puck's or Quinn's?

I need to have a marathon one day and just start at the beginning and see what all I missed.

I love Sue, she is probably my favorite but just because she's an ass. LOL

Quinn's baby is Puck's. She told Finn it was his (because, apparently, he's a borderline moron and actually thought he could get her pregnant without intercourse). But then Rachel (the cow!) told Finn it was Puck's. Not that I endorse the lie, but I just don't think it was Rachel's place to be the one to blow the whistle.

I think when you watch the eps back-to-back, it might be easier to notice some of the flaws (for instance, the repetitive nature of the choreography, particularly for Rachel and Finn).

Sue is crazy fun.

Oh, Kurt is totally an awesome singer. And so is Tina, and so is Artie, and so is Santana...and so why don't we hear them singing more? Even Quinn has a pleasant voice. It kind of bugs that most of the numbers feature Rachel singing something, no matter what it is, at the top of her lungs.

I think what I like about Mercedes singing is just the joyous way Amber Riley sings. Its more...fun, for lack of a better term.

And I totally prefer Puck over Finn. I am hoping that S2 will allow us to delve a bit more deeper into him, because so far in S1, there hasn't been much on him. And he's really an interesting character, and damn good singer.

I just watched the 4 Minutes number last night, and it was incredible! I don't know if I can pick out a favorite number yet, though this one might get the crown. Any big number where Rachel and Finn dopily make cow eyes at each other is automatically eliminated.

I fear I might lost patience with it too, if it doesn't utilize its whole amazing cast. But so far, I'm hooked.

*raises hand* oh me, I am a Glee lover! Now we have a show to talk about :0)
Oh and they will get back to Quinns living situation soon, no worries.

Oh good, thank God. Because I'm watching this show, and everytime they focus on Quinn and she runs her hand over her baby belly, I can't help but think "Where the hell is this poor girl living, and who is providing for her?" I find something so compelling about that character, and I can't quite put my finger on it.

I'm a casual watcher - favourite characters: Sue, Mercedes, Kurt, Kurt's Dad, Britney/Santana. Don't like: Mr. Schue. I enjoy Rachel when she's being a driven, ambitious pain-in-the-ass, not so much when the show tries to "soften" her.

Man crush: Mike (aka "Other Asian") who's adorable.

About 80% of the time, I grit my teeth at their cover versions, particularly of rock songs. But I like when they do show tunes or obscurities that I haven't heard before.

You know, even though I like Mr Schue, I can see where he'd rub people wrong.

I love it when someone makes a comment about Rachel being crazy, or having to pretend to listen to her. Because really, thats how you'd expect people to react to her.

I understand there will be more about Mike in S2. I'm looking forward to more on his character.

LOL, ya know, when I posted this entry, I really wondered if I was totally out of step with the Glee fandom in who I liked, and didn't. But it seems I'm not.

I guess I really don't understand the casting for Finn. The actor is a decent actor, and a decent singer, but he's not great at either. And he's not especially convincing as an athelete either. He really needs to have more charisma to stand out, or he shouldn't be getting so much focus.

There's no doubt that Lea Michele has an amazing voice. Just really incredible. But I do question how she's been directed to sing almost every song. Not everything needs to be belted out like your life depended on it. I'd love to see more subtlety there.

OMG, when Brittany said that dolphins were just gay sharks, I was dying. She's hilarious, and so clueless. Quinn is fascinating to me too. I guess what I would say for her is still waters run deep. And since we've seen a glimpse into her horrific upbringing, it really makes her actions at the beginning of the show so much more understandable.

I'm now getting into the 2nd half of S1, so I'm excited if its better. But I liked the first half a lot. I haven't seen Bad Reputation yet, but now I'm looking forward to it.

Ack! This cannot be right---I'm so used to you and I sharing a brain, heh.

I gave Glee a try - I watched the first 7 eps, in fact. I decided not to go ahead with it though, because even though I found certain elements entertaining, like Sue and her insanely amazing insults, and the music, but by the end of the 7th ep, I ::still:: wasn't really feeling any of the characters. For me, being able to invest myself emotionally in the characters journies is a big factor in keeping me hooked to a series. And here, while I enjoy Sue' OTTness, and the wife being all crazy cakes, and there's potential I see in characters like Puck, Quinn and Mercedes, the caricature-ness (bear with me on the invention of the word, heh) is just too jarring. Especially with the leads like Rachel and Finn. The former, who, I have to be honest, grated on my every nerve by the time I was through.

I feel so out of the loop, because I honestly did try giving this and The Vampire Diaries a fair shake, but couldn't get into either. :-(

But now here's the thing - do you think I ought to give it a few more eps? Does it get bette, in terms of the characters getting added a bit more depth to? Or do you reckon if I haven't been able to hook myself thus far, then it probably isn't the right fit for me?

Aug. 16th, 2010 07:41 pm (UTC)
LOL, its OK. We feel the same way about The Vampire Diaries anyway.

Its very difficult to have a character as grating as Rachel be your lead. Theres a very fine line there, and honestly, I just think other actors on the show outshine her in the personality and charisma department. And that would be OK if I didn't feel like she was so heavily pushed to the forefront. But I wonder if they won't change that a bit in S2. I hope so.

Let me finish all of S1, and I'll let you know what I think of it as a whole, then I'll let you know if I think you should give it another go.

I'm a Glee fan too, even though it has MASSIVE flaws. The only characters I like without reservation are Kurt, his dad and Mercedes. Puck is usually fun and I like Quinn more often than not. And Sue is such a magnificent bastard, how can you not love that performance?

Like you, I'm not a big fan of Rachel and Finn. At least with Rachel, we do get a first class voice and I do love some of her neurotic moments. Finn - not so much.

On the other hand, some of the plots have been epic fail to the nth degree - fake baby anyone? - and I have some issues with how the songs are presented on screen (I'd prefer a few more naturalistic numbers, less heavily produced musically). Oh well. For those moments when everything does work, I'll forgive the show for just about anything!

I feel like all I'm talking is the flaws, but really, I love the show overall. Its still incredibly entertaining. I just think it could be even better with a little tweaking.

I'm really scratching my head on the casting for Finn. He should Pop! out a bit more, and the actor they choose doesn't do it at all.

The only thing that really bugs me about the heavily produced numbers is that the choreography is very hit and miss.

I do. It's not my favourite but I got sucked in late, too. I love Kurt and his dad and I love Santana. Once they start letting her sing, you wonder why they never did before. She and Brittany are hysterical. And Sue never lets up, it's great.

Oh, definitely on Santana's voice. Why was that kept under wraps so long? I hear Brittany will get her chance for a solo in S2.

It is a very addicting show.

I DO I DO!!! I actually kind of adore Santana and I'm almost postive I shouldn't. But she's just so unrepentatly liberated sexually and I actually prefer her voice over the "belters" (though I do love Rachel and Mercedes voices TBH), because her range is lower and I find deep singing voices in women fascinating. Plus she's also an unrepentant bitch and I LOVE that. *points at icon and my love of Cordelia and Darla*

Hey, why shouldn't you adore Santana? She's a lot of fun. And one thing I find compelling about her, Brittany and Quinn is that none of them started out wanting to love the Glee club, and we know that all of them really do.

And her voice is beautiful.

Welcome to Glee! \o/

Don't worry. Not many people like Rachel Barry at all. We hope she gets a clue. This is all you need to know about Glee, really, IMO:

Kurt is love.
Brittany/Santana is love.
Sue Sylvester is a goddess.
Mercedes has the most awesome voice ever.

That is all.

SO glad you're watching!

I feel so warm and fuzzy amongst other Rachel dislikers. :)

Kurt is totally love. He was one of the actors on the CC panel I saw, and he's just awesome. Actually, they all were.

And I LOVE your icon.

I am indeed a Gleek :) And Sue Sylvester is my anti-hero - I let the kids that I teach know that one day if I try really hard I'll be a teacher just like her. ;)

Britney CRACKS me up. Everyone else is just part of the ensemble for me. Except Kurt - boy is an under appreciated genius I'm sure *g*

Well, I suspect that Kurt isn't too unappreciated. Well, the actor that plays him anyway, since he did snag an emmy nomination. Then again, they also nominated Lea Michele, and I don't think I'm quite there with them on that one.

The actress that plays Brittny is also very funny in RL. And not even the least bit dumb.

I have seen the first season..I'm not part of the fandom really but I do like Quinn and Sue Sylvester...oh and Santana/Brittany are awesome.

I like Kurt and his dad together but I think Kurt himself is a bit of a manipulative ass, especially in theatricality.

I'm so glad that so many people like Quinn as much as I do. I wasn't quite sure if liking her would be a popular opinion or not.

I do think Kurt can be manipulative. But, I find it doesn't impact how much I love him.

I'm a Gleek too! I have to admit, I preferred the 1st half of the season, but I watched the 2nd half on my laptop and that has a negative impact. I'll see when I buy the 2nd half on DVD.
I like all the characters, even Rachel, although I'm also tired of her Broadway voice that she uses the same way for every song. Finn is indeed a bit insignificant but his light tenor voice matches Rachel's really well. I'm also scratching my head as to WHY on earth don't they let the other characters sing more solos.
I like them all, but I LOVE Kurt! He's himself and not apologizing for it even if he's thrown in the dumpster every day! My favorite line: "You'll all work for me one day." And that clip "All the single ladies". Hilarious! From time to time, there's a Kurt solo version of Defying gravity that pops up on YouTube; if you happen to catch it, it's wonderful and his unusual countertenor voice is so much more interesting than Rachel's imo.
I don't have a Glee icon, so here's happy Clark.

Why do you think watching it on your laptop gave you a negative impact? Just too small?

It actually occured to me that the casting of Finn may have been done to compliment Rachel/LM, but not come close to overshining her. Because it does seem that LM is their "big star". I just think that mindset could really hurt the show over the long haul, not to mention neglect the talents of a lot of the other cast members.

I see the ep where Kurt sang Defying Gravity. A-Mazing!

I'll match your Happy Clark
