Screentime Totals for Phantom

Forgive me if I mess this up. This will be my 2nd time posting to my LJ, so if I'm a spaz, be kind :)

For anyone not familiar, each week for Smallville, I've been keeping track of the main characters screen minutes, and then keeping a tally of the season-to-date numbers. This started more or less as a lark when it was beginning to feel like Clark was not quite as prominent as he'd been in the past. I've been posting this on TWoP, but with recent events, I don't know if I will continue to do so. But since I hate to leave a job half done, I figured now was as good a time as any to use my LJ to post the numbers for the final episode, "Phantom", and give the overall season totals. I thought it would also be fun to note the highs and lows for the characters.

So, without further delay...

Phantom, running time 41:53 (1m 31s of this was "previously on...")

Clark - 16m, 18s
Lex - 10m, 16s
Lana - 7m, 50s
Chloe - 5m, 26s
Lois - 6m, 38s

Season total:

Clark - 377m, 12s (22 eps)
Episode High: Labyrinth, 37m, 35s
Episode Low: Static, 7m, 33s

Lex - 221m, 47s (22 eps)
Episode High: Reunion, 21m, 51s*
Episode Low: Labyrinth, 3m, 21s
(*Includes screentime where Lex was played by a different actor)

Lana - 237m, 46s (21 eps)
Episode High: Trespass, 26m, 16s
Episode Low: Reunion, 4m, 52s

Chloe - 220m, 19s (22 eps)
Episode High: Progeny, 23m, 11s
Episode Low: Reunion, 3m, 30s

Lois - 120m, 18s (13 eps)
Episode High: Crimson, 18m, 1s
Episode Low: Zod, 4m, 37s

Oliver - 84m, 39s (7 eps)
Episode High: Reunion, 18m, 48s*
Episode Low: Hydro, 2m, 46s
(*Includes screentime where Oliver was played by a different actor)

Longest episode : Zod, 42m, 4s
Shortest episode : Labyrinth, 39s even

Just read your little paragraph at the top, what's up with TWoP? I did notice you've been missing. (you don't have to answer if its too personal, but you've been missed!)

My account was suspended until tomorrow. I have no clue why, and haven't been able to get any answers to any of the 5 emails I've sent asking for clarification. So, I guess only Omar knows what is up? Since I didn't post anything remotely inflammatory, I'm at a loss.

But thanks for missing me *hugs you* :)

oh gosh, sorry to see something unfair happen to you when I know I've never seen you post anything remotely offensive :(

*hugs* and welcome back, tomorrow ;)

Wow! Thank you for this! And don't worry about LJ spazzing - I think that's kind of what LJ exists for. :)

Thats good to know. I figure it was about time I plunged right on in. Now, if I can just think of something interesting to say.

I was going to ask about what happened at TWoP too. I'm sorry to hear that. Another reason to thoroughly dislike the site, since your posts are one of the very few reasons I'd ever visit there.

Thanks for these very interesting numbers!

Thanks Carol. Yeah, its been...well, I'll just say that I'm not sure how this MB story is going to end. But hopefully this means I'll be channeling more energy into places that you also post. :)

You are welcome. How amazingly obsessive and anal was this undertaking? But it was actually fun to do. But I'll let someone else figure out screentime averages and such. My math skills only go so far.

Thank you for doing this! Wow, Lex and Chloe were neck a neck for total screentime.

you're welcome Pep. Yeah, Lex and Chloe kept jockeying back and forth for 3rd place, and Lex actually made up a lot of ground in the last 1/4 of the season.

Hey, thanks, and ditto, but you knew that.

But as for back? Sort of undecided. The explanation I got was unbelievable bullshit. And I PMed back with my feelings on the matter. So, whether I stay back, and whether or not I even feel like I can post there without being picked on? Still a huge question mark, sadly. :(

Even if Omar's being snitty (which disappoints me, frankly) your fellow posters would miss you. It's rare for a poster to be able to bridge the gap between all the different groups ('shippers, non-shippers, Chloisers, Clark-lovers, er....Lex-fanciers etc.) And unbiased posters really help the boards maintain an attitude of calm.

I'm not sure if this is Omar, or this Sars person. I have no idea. Its completely random and bizarre. Apparently the complaint Sars has is that I said the Lois/Chloe fan wars get nasty on both sides. So, I shouldn't be talking about other fans, and thats what prompted this. WTF? Except that the SV forum talks about other fans, fangroups, other MBs, etc all the damned time. And I wasn't even taking sides or being rude to anyone or condemning anyone. All I pointed out was that it is what it is, and its not to be unexpected given the fact that fans of both gals sort of want the same role on the show for their gal. Is that inflammatory in any way? And there are posts all over the board talking about other fans/fangroups that are still standing.

So, what does someone do with something like that? I'm really just stunned.

I read that post and thought it was very fair and measured - in fact, it sums up the crux of the Chloe/Lois fan dilemma - and people have certainly posted far more inflammatory things about other forums. It's not "boards on boards" when you're discussing larger trends in fandom.

I wonder if some poster got their nose out of joint and reported your post to Forum Traffic Court? That would explain how Sars got involved. She doesn't visit the SV threads so someone must have brought it to her attention. She still should have let it go though - or rebuked the complainer for wasting her time.

I have no clue. I sent a message to her asking for clarification, and pointed out that discussing fan groups was a frequent occurence on the SV boards. God knows Sweet and the Clana fans are singled out repeatedly. I haven't gotten any response, so we'll see what happens. Until then, I think its best I find a new posting home.

But hey, I expect a few of my Tom loving buds to keep his thread up. ;)

Hi Val, it's Seema. Just got your email. Wow, what unbelievable bullshit, of the highest order. I'm going to reply to you in detail to your email tonight, but I thought I'd show a voice of support here too, since you linked it. And you have it up and runing---I'm so proud. ;-) Heh.

Thanks for the screen totals, as always.

Talk to you soon,

Dear Static,

You still suck.

Thanks for putting these up! So interesting!

ITA, for so many reasons, but most of all, less then 8 minutes of Clark screentime.

But interestingly enough, Noir had less then 9 minutes of Clark screentime. Its his second lowest tally.

Huh, that is interesting! Of course, the time he had onscreen in Noir was SO FREAKING HOT that I'm happier with it than stupid Static, where Clark actually *did* have an interesting plotline, we just weren't allowed to see it.

Oh yeah, the pretty in Noir is a good compensation for the lack of screentime.

Don't even get me started on Clark confronting a 'zoner getting less then 7 minutes of screentime. Its Nuts!

Interesting statistics, thanks a lot for those. Do you have those in some other format like any kind of table? I'd be interested in some trends from the beginning to the end of the season, etc.
jeannev
May. 30th, 2007 09:19 pm (UTC)
Well, I don't have them in any other format, but if there is enough interest, I'd be willing to post the information for each episode here on my LJ. I suppose there, someone could transfer it to another format for comparision.

Would there be interest in all the totals by episode?

My pleasure. It was actually an eye opening experiance, and believe it or not, I am tempted to do it for earlier seasons. Maybe I'll take requests for which season people want me to do. Uh-oh! :)
