Odyssey Screentime Minutes

Ah, another season, more screentime minutes to tally up (and I still need to go back and do S1 & S2).

I'm hoping to do this no more then 48 hours after the episode airs, but I've been a bit busy and distracted.

Odyssey - running time 41m, 50s (the "previously on" ran 1m, 27s)

Clark   17m, 24s
Chloe  10m, 18s
Lois      6m, 45s
Jimmy  1m, 59s
Tess     6m, 47s
Oliver  10m, 59s

Just to compare Clark screentime in other premiere eps (going back to S2-on)

Vortex    18m, 51s
Exile      18m, 18s
Crusade  15m, 39s
Arrival    21m, 15s
Zod       17m, 51s
Bizarro 18m, 59s

So, I guess Odyssey was really the usual for Clark in a premiere

His screen time was lower for "Crusade"? Really? That's interesting.

I figured it would be one of his lowest ones though. These numbers are surprising ... I thought Tess was there more.

Thanks for compiling them! It was fun to see. :D

Yeah, sometimes the numbers can surprise you.

I also thought there was more of Tess. I was expecting something in the 8-9m range. The fact that there was less or her, but it felt like more may not be a good thing, LOL

Thanks for these numbers. Since my times for Bizarro are different, did you count only Clark? Because in my Tom time count, I get about 25 minutes, which is a big difference. But this includes Bizarro of course.

Ah, I make seperate categories. I'll do screentime for Clark, screentime for Bizarro, then screentime for Tom Welling.

LOL, yeah, just a bit on the anal side, aren't I? LOL

That low screen time surprised me...

Hmm... seems about normal then.

Oh, so far, I just want to verify, have you run into an episode where Lex hadn't been in it at all prior to Odyssey?

Craig didn't think he was missing from any prior to that, but I just want to make sure...

I think it's sad thinking that this is the first episode he's not been in over the previous 152.

*sniff*

(Although, I didn't really miss him all that much, to be honest... I love Lex and Michael, but his character has been ill-served recently.)

Lex has never missed an episode. I did check that out.

I missed Lex, but you are right, they didn't always use the character well.

I'm surprised that there were only 2 minutes of Jimmy. That scene felt like an eternity!

I feel the same way about the Tess screentime too.

Does the Clark screentime for Bizarro that you listed include Tom as Bizarro or just Clark?

So the screentime for all of the main characters was fairly evenly distributed even though it didn't feel that way...I bet Regan had at least as much screentime as Tess, do you think?

Thanks for doing this!

I agree on the Chimmy scene. When you actually see the length of scenes, it can be really surprising how 2m can look so short, or so long.

Bizarro screentime is just Clark in Bizarro. Total screentime for Tom Welling was 27m,47s by my calcutations.

I didn't time Regan, but yeah, I'd imagine he was easily at about 5m.

When I re-watched Odyssey last night, I actually got up and left the room during the Chimmy scene to do something (I don't remember what) and I was getting really antsy during the Tess scenes too. Like you said to tariel, they were not engaging me at all.

I'm hoping that once Tess interacts with Clark and Lois (more) and Oliver and Chloe, her scenes will be more interesting.

Tess felt like more to me. LOL! She's obviously oppressive!

I guess in the season premieres they're trying to include everyone's story at least a little bit, and let us know where everyone stands, so the screentime is spread around more?

I watched the episode again last night right before I went to bed, and I love that scene in the plane with Oliver more evey time I see it. Not only do I like what Clark is saying, Tom is unbelievably gorgeous in that lighting, and wearing Oliver's clothes. :) The hair is a bit wonky, though.

Thanks so much for doing these stats! I will be following them closely this season, to see how Clark's time compares both with prior seasons, and with the three characters they added.

I thought his hair looked really cute on the plane! :-) Different, but cute.

Okay, I'll have to go watch it again, a couple of times, to see if I was mistaken about that. Sheesh, the sacrifices I make for fandom! ;)

That is very noble of you to rewatch the show. I'm sure you won't enjoy all the hotness because watching it will be purely for scientific purposes. :-)

Anyway, I didn't mean to attack you or anything about your opinion on Tom's hair. We're certainly allowed to disagree on some things. :-)

Don't worry, I don't consider you disagreeing with me an attack. If the biggest conflict we have is over Tom's hair, I think we're doing okay. LOL! *hugs*

But I did look at screen caps at work today, and I think I'm willing to concede to "different but cute." :D I think the style is what they've decided on for "iconic Clark Kent hair." :)

*points to your icon* OMG, will you look at the size of those man hands?! And those arms? AM is one lucky girl, if you ask me.

AM is VERY lucky. As cute as Aaron Ashmore is, are you really telling me she'd rather make out with him than Tom?!?!?

I definitely believe when a character feels like they're on screen for a long time, but they really aren't, that means they aren't engaging the viewer completely. Thats exactly how I feel whenever Jimmy is on screen. Its like he's there forever, and then its less then 2m.

The plane scene is too die for. My God, the way Tom and Justin are photographed is unreal. Kevin Fair may end up rivaling Whitney Ransick for being able to bring the Pretty!

I did think Siren was full of cool shots, like Ollie and Chloe looking down from the DP roof with the globe spinning behind them, and that shot of Lex with guns blazing in both hands. But this episode was on a whole different level!

But of course Labyrinth still stands out as the prettiest I have ever seen Clark. I still can't believe some of the shots Ransick was able to achieve in that episode.

And no Ransick this season :( :( :(

I kind of feel the opposite about that... I always think that Lois is on screen much longer than she actually is, because her presence is so large and charismatic.

I would not have guessed that she was in the episode for four less minutes than Chloe, who bored me to death and barely even seemed to be there.

Hmm, thats interesting. Maybe its also about the quality of on-screen time. Maybe the reason Tess, and Jimmy, felt like they were on screen longer then they were to me is because I wasn't really engaged in their scenes. And the reason that Clark felt he was on screen less (and I was also suprised at Oliver's screentime) was because I was enjoying their scenes?

"Monotonous" is a good word. I actually think the whole exteme makeup, severe fashion, arching eyebrow thing is going to get old really fast. I didn't see much subtext in her performance. But its her first ep, so I'm not condemning her. I'm just not overwhelmed out of the gate.

I also said this before...somewhere...but I think part of the problem is that she only had one scene with a SV regular cast member, and so I wasn't so drawn into her scenes. I'm very anxious to see how she pings off Clark in the next episode. I happen to believe Tom generally has very good chemistry with females, so I hope that holds.

Sorry to butt in on your comment to someone else, but I agree that Tom could have chemistry with anyone (my sack of potatoes theory) and he will automatically make anyone he's interacting with more interesting, in my opinion.

Exactly! Is it Thursday yet? ;-)

I happen to think Tom has been extraordinarily good with almost all of the females he's worked with (I think its a bit spottier with males). Thats why I never understand the claims of "Tom & -whoever-" have no chemistry. But then again, chemistry is subjective, and I never understand why people make these grand proclamations as though their opinion is law.

I do think we'll get a better sense of Tess when she's worked more with the regulars, particularly Tom.

Now it really feels like the SV season is underway, the screentime project returns! :-)

I'm so surprised with Tess' numbers. Her and Lois had practically the same amount of screentime, yet Tess' scenes seemed to drag on forever.

I am pleased though to see that Clark retained his average for season premieres.

Yeah, I was really shocked that Lois and Tess were pretty much even. Because I know it felt to me like one was on screen A LOT more then the other. But thats why doing these numbers is such a trip....it really shows how perception can make all the difference.

I figure 8x03 is the first ep where Clark's screentime is really going to take a hit :( I can't say I'm looking forward to it. And I hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for the screen time numbers and for the very accurate comments! I agree that the Tess scenes, and the Chimmy one, seemed to go on forever. We'll see what happens when Tess interacts with Clark.

Once again, thank you for doing this!

You are very welcome. I'm still looking forward to the Clark/Tess interaction, and I know that will definitely effect my judgement of the character and actress. I'm less looking forward to a lot of time and attention being devoted to her with a certain other character. But, no spoilers :P

I know what you mean and neither I am! And I'm not looking forward to episode #3 if it's going to be what it looks like. There's not time left for sidetracking and those stories belong on another show. IMO.
