I haven't wanted to talk  much about this episode.  Mostly because it just depressed me.  Reading some of the reviews, I see some people got great stuff out of this episode.  And I think thats great.  But I just haven't really been able to get there myself.

But, here's a few things I did like

I liked Christina Milian.  I thought she did a good job, and had some nice sparkly chemistry going with Tommy.  I thought the loft scene when they were rehearsing was very cute.  It seems no matter how many variations on that scene Tom does, its always funny.

I thought the FX were quite special.  I really liked the opening sequence, and Clark's save of Lana was well done.

Its awesome to have Lionel back!

The crazy, Misery-like, pot-growing lady was hilarious.  What was with the pot farm?  Oh show, sometimes you are so whacked.

The Clex was terrific!  Loved how Tom and Mike played that.

Totally adored Lionel calling Lana a crazy woman, and his "Oh, Please"  to her claims of innocence.

And ya know, Tom looked A-Mazing!  And thats always a big plus for any Smallville episode ;)

On the negative side, I didn't enjoy the jab at fandom.  I never thought Gough/Millar had the touch for it, and I think this episode was proof of that.  I was getting more of a "fuck off" vibe, then a playful "you guys are crazy, but we love ya" vibe.

The evil Lana stuff just fills me with dread.  Its definitely entertaining.  It definitely makes her more interesting.  But I have no hopes or expectations for Lana to be held accountable for her actions, nor do I expect Clark to have the sort of reaction he should have.  And that means that Lana interesting evil arc will come at the expense of Clark's character, and I hate that very much.

And what the hell is going on with the chemistry between KK and Tom?  Why are they so weird together?  My sister and I were trying to come up with an explanation for it, and the closest we could come was that they both seem so phoney.  Its some weird cross between trying to hard, and not attempting to make it believable.  They're just  passionless and creepy now.

As you can see by screentime totals, Lois' story got less then 5 minutes.  And I don't believe less then 5 minutes is even telling her story.  Especially when you waste some of that time on pointless romantic banter with a new cast member that looks 16.  Its great she can break into some place, but where did she get the badge?  How did she get in?  She can hack now?  Cool, when did she pick up that trick?  The lead?  Where did it come from?  I want to enjoy her journalism arc, but I really can't  when I'm not seeing the meat on the bones.

Ah, anyway, I wish I was feeling more optimistic.  :-/

I don't know how I'm feeling about this season so far...
Even though she was 'off' in some places, I did like CM's whole vibe with Clark, especially the last scene. And I liked the two big Clark saves.

The production assistant guy was okay, a little too over the top for me at times (but then, maybe that was the point).

Being a lover of horror movies, I don't typically get squeamish, but Lionel pulling that trap out of his hand did cause me to cringe.

The Clark and Chloe scene in the beginning seemed weird. Chloe's talking about being newly single due to her breakup (in a roundabout way) and Clark doesn't even acknowledge it. In fact, I thought Chloe was off during most of this episode for some reason.

But I can't really get excited about Lionel scolding Lana due to the same fears you have about the Lana shades of gray/black thing going on right now.

And I hope Lana isn't going to start up with the hints about getting some nookie. Her constantly nagging him about his secret in season 2 when he very clearly did not want to tell her was the first thing that moved me from the 'meh' to the 'annoyed' column with regard to her character. Clark's clearly not ready to make that leap again (and I honestly hope that when he is ready, it won't be with her), and it's going to get as annoying as her 'secrets and lies' spiel if she keeps on doing it.

Re: the TW/KK chemistry (or lack thereof)

I actually cringed and turned away from the screen at one particular point: during the closeup on KK's face while Clark was lowering Lana down, and it was for exactly the reason you stated. It was so overdone it looked fake and I was almost embarrassed for the actors.

Sometime last year, I resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn't be able to relax and really enjoy this show anymore while it was still on the air... or when it's off the air if they don't end in a way that satisfies me. Joy for any episode that I do really like (or even just the ones I don't hate) only lasts about 24 hours, then I start worrying and thinking up ways they're going to screw it up next week (or the week after that, or the week after that).

And I feel like I can't "allow" myself to get too interested in a storyline, or a particular character anymore, due to the show's history of retconning things for the worse. I actually debated whether I was going to watch this season at all, because I didn't want to go through all the ups and (heartbreaking, frustrating) downs of last season via Clark.

And I don't know if it's because I've been watching this show for a couple of years now and the novelty's worn off or what, but the magic for me is practically gone now. At this point, I'm not even watching the show for Clark, I'm watching it to see Tom (damn him for making me fall in love with Clark because, outside of the first couple of seasons, it sure as hell wasn't the writing).

That was a very graphic scene. I think the purpose of it was so we could see how hard core Lionel is, but it really did seem to be a bit much.

In fact, I thought Chloe was off during most of this episode for some reason.

I agree, but I've found Chloe to be off all season. I think they are transistioning her character, but I'm not sure its coming off very well. And her and Clark just seem off and distant.

But I can't really get excited about Lionel scolding Lana due to the same fears you have about the Lana shades of gray/black thing going on right now.

Right, exactly. And while its great that Lionel is finally calling Lana on shit, because people so rarely do, its also coming from a character who is in a rather dubious position himself.

And I feel like I can't "allow" myself to get too interested in a storyline, or a particular character anymore, due to the show's history of retconning things for the worse.

I totally understand the feeling. Its the same reason I can't seem to take foreshadowing conversations that seriously either. Because there's never really any payoff. And if something needs to be swept under the rug to advance the plot goughlar wants, then it will be. End of story.

At this point, I'm not even watching the show for Clark, I'm watching it to see Tom (damn him for making me fall in love with Clark because, outside of the first couple of seasons, it sure as hell wasn't the writing).

Tom is certainly my biggest motivating factor. And the writing for Clark is so frustrating for me, I can only imagine what it is for him.

I still love Clark, inspite of all the inconsistent writing, but I agree in that Tom Welling is most definitely my primary reason for watching the show too, at this point.

::nods to the Lionel love:: Loved having him back!

Lois' screentime was criminal. I was really torn about her in this one. I really appreciated certain aspects while I hated others.

Clana is just plain wierd at the moment. And I was disappointed in that final scene between them, because I really feel Clark had stared thinking outside the confines of SV but then we get this.

Chlark is still off too. Really inconsistent.

The Clex scene was very, very good though, IMO.

I didn't really care for the meta stuff either. It all jsut seemed meh.

And Lana. Whatever her (admittedly some very valid, IMO) justifications or reasons may be, she simply went too far in this one. She's very much crossed the line from just merely "shady" now. Is there going to be any fallout? Who knows.

As for optimism, I'm definitely cynical, but I guess perhaps not as much as you might be feeling, because---::drumroll:: I'm avoiding spoilers now! Or atleast that's the intent. Heh. I decided to see if this contibutes at all in me maybe enjoying the show more. Let's see how it works out.

Btw, as per your request/suggestion, left a review of this on my lj. :-)

Love Lois or hate her, the show only has her around for 13 eps. How do you give her less then 5 minutes of screentime, and make her longest scene an annoying flirtation with her boss? Its mind boggling.

Character consistency is not a SV longsuit.

Wow, I'm so proud of you :) I lack the willpower.

Cool, I'll comment.

I know, I just figured, what the hell, might as well give this spoiler free thing a try. See if it helps further my enjoyment of the show at all. Not sure if it will, and I'm not even sure if I'll be able to stay completely spoiler free. Heh. But I'll certainly try. Atleast avoiding spoilers will save me the pre-episode disappointment stages!

I've never told you but I get a kick out of your commentary and your acting time break-down.

Thanks for sharing this for us!

Aww, thanks. I appreciate that!

I don't do meta very well. But I do my best.

As for the screentimes, I'm glad people find it interesting. I know I sure do. Now that I'm working on the 3rd year of it, it should be fun to note some differences between the seasons, and look for trends. :)

I loved Lionel confronting Lana although why he was being charitable with his "you're on the prcipice," (or whatever) made no sense since she has been a psycho from the beginning and since Lionel, more than anyone, knows how bad she really is. After all, he, along with Lex covered up her killing Jason's mother, knows Lana threatened to kill him in Nemesis while he awaited surgery for his injuries, knows she faked her death and framed Lex and apparently helped her cover that up, too. And he was on the recieving end of her escalating cruelty since he was hand-clamped in a bear trap by her minion (and maybe it was Lana's orders) AND smacked with a shovel by her in this ep alone. All this is not stadning on the edge; it is over and falling fast and there is no redemption possible from things like this.

Sadly, it has always made Clark look like a moron not to question Lana and it would really make him look like a fool were they to ever get serious again, especially since Clark does know some of the crap that Lana has committed even now. They have always trashed the hero's character for Lana and to appease Clana fans for some reason I have never understood and I hope they don't go to far this time as they have in the past.

Clark looked like a jerk in not at least saying he was sorry for JO breaking up with Chloe. I can't decide whether it was just a bad cut or if there was supposed to be some message (my relationship with Lana is a farce because she's an evil bitch or something) when Clark turns his back on Chloe (who has put up with more Clark Lana-whining than any human should ever have to) there but it was such a bad cut (because there had to be time for more nauseating Clana after all!) we were left to figure it out for ourselves. Smallville always leaves out too much and expects viewers to work it our for themselves.

I actually thought the Lana falling scene was one of the worst FX scene I think I've ever seen on the whole series because KK just laid there and made her wide bulging eyes face at the camera and did not in the least act like someone who'd been thrown off a building. She didn't flail or anything, just lay/hung there. And even if the crash into the van below was intended to say this ship is crashing and burning, it also made Clark look like he had no control whatsoever and that was dumb, too. Possibly he was blinded by the angelic light shining from Lana Lang's ass, as are we all.

I wish they'd had more fun with the behind the scenes aspect of this ep and the message to fans seemed somewhat insulting. Yes, there are some fans who are idiots and can't separate fantasy from reality but they are a minority and most of which no doubt reside over at Sweet. The rest of us put up with a lot of nonsense from the producers and writers of this show and we ought to get some kudos for it from time to time.

All in all there was again too much Lanaville to make the rest of the ep as enjoyable as it could have been.
