A Query

Hello everyone :)  I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas, or if you don't celebrate Christmas, the winter holiday of your preference.  Mine was just fine.  The day after though, we here in NY got socked with a snow storm.  So, ya know, that was fun.  I'm not sure what the final snowfall tally was, but I'd say its north of 2 feet.  Luckily, we were able to get the snowblower assembled and working, so that I could use it today to clear out the ridiculously long driveway, and the front walk.  The back walkway was a loss though, as it was a drift site, and the snow is about 3' - 4' over there.  Too much for the snowblower, or my trusty shovel.  I'll have to wait for a bit of melt before clearing that off.  All my poor Christmas animals are covered in snow!  Except my Parrot, who mocks them all from his lofty perch.  I am very happy to report though that no one fell over in the 50 mile per hour gusts of wind, and no one seems to have gone out.  So, Victory!

So, here's my query.  I was wondering if anyone wanted to engage in a bit of mid-season analysis of the final year of Smallville.  Someone posted a thread like that on K-Site, and it got some interesting replies, and I thought we might use the hiatus to do that here.  Or, are we all a bit too "Meh" on Smallville on that moment to feel engaged enough to bother?  Because I feel that way myself, quite often.

Chime in, and let me know if anyone is interested, and I'll get the ball rolling with my mid-season report card (the season is probably about a C for me at the moment).

The Bumble probably likes the snow!

Sure, I'll play! Still waiting on a solid action ep. for S10...

Cool! Thats one. :)

The Bumble seemed unconcerned with this pile of snow that was sitting on his head. I was very proud of him.

I think it's pretty telling that I'm still stuck on 10x06, despite being a pretty regular (and OCD) watcher. It's not that I've found this season BAD per se (I can think of plenty of other seasons that have put me off a lot more), but I guess I'm just losing interest. :(

I get that. Its really sad for me that this is the shows last season, and I'm struggling with apathy over it.

OK, cool. I think you and I are probably very much in the same place with the show right now. I know a lot of people love Homecoming, but I honestly think people are so enamored of the furture stuff that they let some of the problems in the ep slide. And hey, I can't say that I don't understand that.

Honestly, I had so few expectations for SPN, I'm surprised at how much I've been enjoying it. Soulless Sam was a trip!

I'd be interested. I don't quite know what to make of this season and it makes me wish that they had an eleventh. I don't want to feel disappointed by the finale of this show :(

Cool!

But NO to an 11th season. I don't think I could take it. LOL

The first half is getting a c from me also. I am very meh on what is coming up in the second half. The first half I have loved two episodes...Ambushed and Homecoming, liked Shield and Luthor, the others were meh Harvest,Lazarus, Isis,(except the parts at the DP including the last scene and the well done Tess characterization), Abandoned, and the boring badly directed, badly acted (guest stars) badly edited, and badly written Patriot, to the truly offensive and shitastic Supergirl. For this being the last season of Smallville it sure feels like the writing is all over the place and the concept of season 10 is feeling to big for the writers to handle. I wish the writers stuck to the VRA and Intergang as a story line for the last season. I was against Darkseid from the first because I just knew this writers could not do it justice. Also really tiered of all of the guest Superhero's and that is why I am not looking forward to the back half of the season.

We really are very similar in our assessment of the season, and thats surprising, since we don't always come at it from the same place. I think it says something that we share so many of the same issues with the season.

And yeah, what we know is coming up in the 2nd half is one big fat pile of Meh. Thats scary.

No we don't always come at our opinions of Smallville from the same place however we do intersect a lot with our opinions and I don't find it surprising at all. I am the type of person if I read a good and well reasoned argument I occasionally will change my opinion or think about it from another point of view...some of your arguments have done this.

Somehow, I thought you would be. I'm hoping to see if we have a bit more interest before I start on my manifesto to kick this off.

I decided that before I do my review, I'm going to try to do a quick rewatch. With the generous help of my FF button.

And *GASP*, you and I in agreement on the grade. I'm shocked I tell ya, Shocked! ;)

I am on a holiday break from fandom... for some reason that I just can't and don't even care to fathom. RL is busier than usual, and I find myself, as much as I hate to admit it, losing some of my passion for SV. Not Tom... of course, but I am SOOOO ready for him to move on. Will love this show to the end, but right now, we are on a serious Ross and Rachel break. :)

All that said, and I would still be interested in reading a series thus far analysis by you, and by others. I'm sure I'll be jumping back in the sandbox soon enough.

I totally understand. I have a lot of those same feelings myself, which is just so frustrating, since this is the final season, and I wanted to go out with a bang, not a whimper.

And like you, I am so ready for Tom to move on. And so afraid of what that might mean.

Hi -- now that Tom has become a big exec-producer and a director, I keep hoping he'll be willing to be Supes on the big screen in the upcoming redo. I understand all these years he didn't want to be typecast and limited, but really he has nothing to be hung up about since he's succeeded so well behind the scenes.

Tom would be an awesome big screen Superman. Unfortunately, even if he was interested, I'd doubt they'd give him the part. My guess is that the new director, and producers, want to create their own Superman, and with Tom, they'd be bringing all the baggage from SV.

But its such a shame, because he would be amazing.

I'm very interested in reading your analysis. Although, I don't have that much to say myself, as I'm watching on and off. Someone on K-site said jokingly that of course the show isn't about Clark, since they don't have anything to do with him anymore and I kind of agree with that. Hence my lack of interest. Looking at the spoilers, it looks like in the writers' mind, the only thing left to do with him is slap a suit on him and let him fly. Which I hope will happen, because it's pretty much the only thing I look forward to at this point.

I know what you mean. Sometimes, its so hard to put the frustration into words. I think, for me, the biggest thing is just how the show makes you feel. And I don't feel like its about Clark in the way I would like.

If I do go ahead with this, I sure hope you'll chime in with your thoughts. I wish so many on my flist weren't so apathetic. :(

Maybe if you post it, they will come?
But I think the general apathy among Clark fans in particular is very telling about the state of the show at this moment.

Sadly, I agree. But I'll also chalk some of it up to the time of year.

I'm not sure it counts if you haven't seen all the eps, LOL!!

Thats OK though, you can just comment on what you've seen. ;)

First of, I hope you enjoyed the holidays. And again, happy new year. :)

It's funny because between blogs, forums, live journals, twitters, etc etc, we discuss tv show episodes quite a lot nowdays! But I wouldn't mind an overall evaluation about the first half. I am all for ending the show this year, but I will definitely miss this sort of stuff in 12 months. So if you care to do an extensive review, I'd be interested to read your thoughts. And with 3 weeks removed from Icarus, it's an opportunity to judge things from a distance.

I've given this season a 6.5/10 thus far. And that is mostly down to how some moments in episodes like Ambush, Abandoned and Luthor gave me hope for this show. Had those not existed, this season would have got a generous 5 from me. It may be too late for S10 to become the best ever (imo), but there's still time to go out in a way that will do justice to the great moments this show has given us.

I'm still planning on doing this, but I decided to do a rewatch first, since I really hadn't bothered rewatching most of the eps since I did my screentime minutes. I think the only eps I watched over again were Ambush and Luthor. So far, I've rewatched throught Isis.

I really hope SV does something extraordinary with its last 11 eps. But going by spoilers, I'm not seeing it.

Coolness! I did my rewatch of Harvest yesterday, and I think I need to detox. OMG, the A plot in that episode is so damned awful. One of my major complaints in my mid-season report will be the waste in the first 11 eps.

I look forward to your review. It seems to me that at best there was only about 20-25% of story development in every episode, while the rest was simply a waste of precious screen time... :((

I am bracing myself for a big disappointment with regard to the finale...

Yeah, sadly, me too. I just don't see a mindset change from these writers, and thats what it would take.

I heard you guys got hit pretty hard by the snow that seems to just dust us a little and then hit you guys. Glad you survived and the Christmas decorations did too! :) I confess as a former Vancouver girl...I'm used to my snow mainly being on the mountains for me to ski on and then if it does hit the city the next day its gone...lol. I have had to make big adjustments...lol.

Smallville...I have some quibs about stuff overall that has been happening re:story/villains/destiny/evil/darkness etc but I guess I'm not that disappointed. Maybe I'll do a re watch and see if I feel the same especially since my other half is only up to ep3 so far. Love reading your thoughts/reviews as always.

Now there's more snow in the forecast for friday and saturday. BLAH! But I have no idea how much, so maybe it will just be flurries.

I certainly respect that there are people that are happy with S10, or aren't quite as nitpicky about things as I am. Honestly, I wish I could be more like that a lot of the time. Thanks for always showing so much respect for others opinions. I really value that. :)

I actually got on LJ just to look for your mid-season review. I'd be thrilled to read your insight into the mess that is this year!!

As I read the comments here, there seems to be a general malaise about this season. I'm wondering what is causing this. Is it is the busyness of RL during the holiday season? Is it that we are all preparing for the emotional emptiness the end of the show will cause? OR is it the general meh of the show this year?

I'm thinking it is a little bit of each for me. A decent picture of Tom would lift my spirits!

Well, I only have one more episode to rewatch, and then I can finally put it up there. I'm trying to figure out a way to post it like its a mid-season report card type of thing, rather then just ranting on about my issues with the season. It might end up being a hybrid of some sort.

I'm sure the holidays and the hiatus have contributed to the general ambivalence that seems to be going around. But really, for me, I think a lot of it is S10. I just don't think its very good. And I find my patience for the shows foibles is so much less now then it used to be. While some people are determined to just enjoy what we get and try to go with the flow (which I understand, and respect completely), I find I'm far more critical, and I don't believe TPTB should be let off the hook like that.

A nice new picture of Tom would be great, but he seems to have engaged his cloaking device again. *sigh* That man is such a frustrating celebrity to be in love with. LOL
